Deep in the darkest reaches of New York – no, not Trump Tower – a group of Devil worshipping cultists within the Church are up to no good. No good is one Hell of an unholy understatement because they are prowling the streets looking for women to sacrifice and bring about the Devil himself so he can bring satanic rule to the streets of New York. The leader of the bunch – the aptly named Thomas Seaton (William Beckwith) has his sights on the beautiful Alexandra (Christine Moore), the granddaughter of one of his followers. She holds the key and he’s going to do what it takes to get her under his spell and lying on the alter. Although...

Last week, Austin’s annual Fantastic Fest bowed under a cloud that stemmed from the secret re-hiring of former Birth.Movies.Death. editor-in-chief Devin Faraci by Drafthouse founder Tim League and the continuing fallout of accusations directed at co-founder Harry Knowles. As the beloved genre festival kicks into its second half, it continues to draw attention for programming choices that reportedly left audience members on edge.
Over the weekend, Fanstastic Fest attendee Kim Sherman took to Instagram to share her experience with a Saturday afternoon showing of Ruben Östlund’s Palme d’or winner “The Square,” an event capped by a post-screening stunt that didn’t strike Sherman and other audience members as a wise choice.
Sherman wrote that, after the film concluded, “They asked us to remain seated after the film while they brought a ‘special guest’ into the room. Then they brought out an actor from the film...

Social media’s reaction to John McCain this week has been a rollercoaster.
He’s up (his rousing speech in the Senate after brain cancer diagnosis); he’s down (he casts deciding vote to open debate on repealing Obamacare); he’s up again (he breaks from his party to cast deciding vote against the “skinny repeal.”)
Or all that in reverse, depending on the political perspective.
After the 80-year-old Arizona senator’s latest act – his maverick “no” vote that meant a 51-49 defeat for President Donald Trump‘s latest push to repeal the Affordable Care Act – has him ending the week on a high note,...

George Washington apparently has nothin’ on President Donald Trump.
During his Youngstown, Ohio, rally on Tuesday evening, Trump told his gathered supporters that, “With the exception of the late, great Abraham Lincoln, I can be more presidential than any president that’s ever held this office.”
The president also attempted to make a convoluted joke about being on Mount Rushmore, stating that if he said it even as a joke the media would take it seriously: “Now here’s what I do. I’d ask whether or not you someday think I will be on Mount Rushmore. But here’s the problem,...

President Trump was almost immediately condemned for his crudely personal attack on Morning Joe host Mika Brzezinski Thursday morning — and some of the most biting comments came from fellow Republicans.
Trump, 70, took to Twitter early Thursday morning with a series of insults aimed at Brzezinski and her cohost/fiancé Joe Scarborough.

That was what you'd call a game changer.
There was so much to love and so much to hate (in the best possible way, of course) about Underground Season 2 Episode 5.
An hour that began with humor as a result of horror-stricken, hypocritical theater patrons after they realized they were being mocked by black people in whiteface, ended in unrest, uncertainty, and tragedy.
Whiteface was the name of this installment, and it came up quite often in various ways.
Cato had previously been accused of trying to blend in with the rest of society, which is predominately white, with his newfound wealth and his age-old arrogance. He has been flaunting his wealth but can't say he's the type to want to blend in with white people.
Cato waxed poetic about the best way to appeal to white people. He spoke of them as a collective entity, foreigners, who he spent his...

When Underground returns to Wgn America for season two on Wednesday, March 8, it’ll make history by presenting Harriet Tubman’s narrative onscreen for the first time since 1978, when Cicely Tyson played the abolitionist on the TV miniseries A Woman Called Moses. In the 39 years since, there’s been little of Tubman’s vast story -- from her escape from slavery to the Underground Railroad to her role as spy and military leader during the Civil War and, later, a suffragette -- presented, unless one counts her brief appearance on an episode of NBC's 1982 time-traveling series Voyagers! or in 2012’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which even the film’s screenwriter, Seth Grahame-Smith, admitted was “sad.”
In fact, several versions of Abraham Lincoln’s story have appeared on TV and in theaters since 1978, with Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln earning Daniel Day-Lewis the 2013 Academy Award for Best Actor for his portrayal of the president. Even [link=nm...

Heavy-hitter Hollywood talent agency UTA eschewed its typical glitzy Oscar party in favor of a Friday afternoon event — billed as the United Voices rally — in front of their offices in Beverly Hills. Members of the UTA family and other entertainment industry players joined together, they stated: “to express the creative community’s support for freedom of speech and artistic expression, and stand against policies of exclusion and division.”
The idea for the rally was sparked by the recent news that Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi — a UTA client — would likely be forced to skip the Oscars (where he is a nominee for his foreign-language contender “The Salesman”) due to the executive order travel ban that prohibited citizens from seven Muslim countries, including Iran, to enter the United States. Though the ban has been halted, Farhadi announced that he would still not attend the event.

If suggestions that Donald Trump and most others in his administration don’t know who Frederick Douglass was aren’t your preferred way of celebrating Black History Month, Nickelodeon might have something to your liking. Courtesy of the Splat — a programming block that features reruns of such Nick classics as “Doug,” “Rugrats” and “Hey Arnold!” — the network has uploaded several Bhm promos that first aired on “Kenan and Kel” way back when.

Alec Baldwin returned to “Saturday Night Live” for last night’s cold open, which means you should expect a series of angry tweets from Donald Trump any minute now. Rather than Vladimir Putin (Beck Bennett) or Rex Tillerson (John Goodman), this time he was joined by Steve Bannon (Mikey Day), who bears a striking resemblance to the Grim Reaper and is clearly pulling all the so-called president’s strings. Watch below.

Saturday Night Live poked fun at Donald Trump's diplomacy skills in a cold open where the president, played once again by Alec Baldwin, and his chief advisor Steve Bannon, played by the Grim Reaper, cold-call world leaders and threaten them with war.
"I've had a long day, I'm tired and cranky and feel like I could just freak out on somebody," "Trump" said.
"Maybe you should call Australia," Bannon suggested.

Kellyanne Conway and Chelsea Clinton are dueling on Twitter over the Trump adviser’s latest “alternative fact.”
After Conway referred to the non-existent “Bowling Green massacre” during a Thursday interview with MSNBC‘s Chris Matthews, many were quick to correct — and criticize — her on social media.
Among the critics was Clinton, who fired off a biting tweet Friday morning that read: “Very grateful no one seriously hurt in the Louvre attack …or the (completely fake) Bowling Green Massacre. Please don’t make up attacks.”

Frederick Douglass was up to pretty big things on Wednesday — at least on social media, after President Trump made a statement suggesting that he might think the famed abolitionist is still alive. During a Black History Month event at the White House on Wednesday, Trump referred to Douglass — who died in 1895 — as “an example of somebody who has done an amazing job and is being recognized more and more, I notice.” Trump’s comment sparked a resurrection of sorts for Douglass on Twitter, as users weighed in on Trump’s seeming confusion. President Donald Trump dedicated a portion of his Black History Month gathering with black supporters on Wednesday to sharing a little known fact about former “Apprentice” contestant and current White House staff member Omarosa Manigault. Turns out, she’s actually pretty cool. “I want to thank my television star over here — Omarosa’s actually a very nice person. Nobody knows that,” he said during what he described as a “little get-together,” during which he briefly mentioned civil rights icon Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and abolitionist movement leader Frederick Douglass while heaping praise on other supporters in the room, including Ben Carson.

Hazing rituals, with their elitist foundations and untold mysteries, have long captured the imaginations of storytellers both comedic and dramatic. Most recently explored in the Nick Jonas vehicle “Goat,” but the topic is basically a subgenre at this point — from Todd Phillips’ documentary “Frat House” to the soapy thriller “The Skulls,” for comedic effect in the Zac Efron vehicle “Neighbors,” and, perhaps most famously, in Richard Linklater’s “Dazed and Confused.”
“Burning Sands,” Gerard McMurray’s entry in the hazing canon, is set at a fictional Historically Black College (Hbcu) called Frederick Douglass University. McMurray, an associate producer on Ryan Coogler’s “Fruitvale Station,” draws from personal experience to make his directorial debut. (McMurray co-wrote the script with Christine Berg). From the film’s overtly dark tone, it is safe to assume McMurray is critical of the most brutal hazing rituals, even if he glorifies them with his camera. The...

"I didn't know that Donald Trump was going to win the election. I did suspect it. It seemed like Hillary was doing well in the polls and yet — I know the whites. You guys aren't as full of surprises as you used to be," Chappelle said.
"But America's done it. We've actually elected an Internet troll as our president. The whites were furious. I've never seen anything like it.

I was pleased to find this online while researching something else entirely. Roger Guenveur Smith's "Frederick Douglass Now" - a monologue performance inspired by the life and work of abolitionist Frederick Douglass. A work that Smith has performed for about 20 years now, speaking of contemporary remixes of styles and stories, it comprises of edited piece of Douglass' 19th Century texts, mixed into Smith's own original writing, to produce what I'd describe as an edgy, stylistic, jazz-infused narrative mash-up that could very well be the blueprint for a potentially exciting feature-length screenplay. Originally commissioned at the La MaMa...
