At 29 years old, Quentin Tarantino made his directorial debut with "Reservoir Dogs." With its punchy pacing and electric performances, it was a brash, violent film that put him on the map as an audacious new storyteller. From his humble beginnings as a Video Archives store clerk to the script landing in Harvey Keitel's hands, Tarantino was able to raise $1.5 million to make the movie and debut it at the Sundance Film Festival.
Duane Byrge from The Hollywood Reporter covered the overwhelming audience response to the searing film: "[T]his plug gutter is wiping out audiences here at the Sundance Film Festival. Those who survive it emerge in a shell-shocked euphoria — so good and so blunt is the writing." The Hollywood Blacklist ruined dozens of lives. United States-based artists who were sympathetic to, or even curious about, communism were demonized as traitors to their country and, due to hysterical pressure from The House Committee on Un-American Activities (aka Huac), banned from working in the industry. Disgraced and unemployed, blacklisted individuals were forced to leave the country if they wanted to continue working or, if they could not afford to relocate, find a line of work where being an alleged communist wasn't frowned upon. This latter option was, of course, dismally unlikely. The mental and financial burden of being completely shunned from one's industry was so unbearable that it led actor Philip Loeb to die by suicide.
This put Hollywood at war against itself. Anyone suspected of having communist ties was pressured to come clean and, if they wanted to continue working, name names (a cowardly practice savaged by films...

As of Friday, Patrick’s Roadhouse was still closed. Plates and pitchers were stacked inside. The old-style coffee maker seemed ready to go, and there were even some bright green lights shining along the roof. But the place looked like a radioactive version of the Spanish Kitchen, frozen in time, plus dinosaurs, leprechauns and the Statue of Liberty on top.
Anyway, the eviction notice plastered among the stickers and shamrocks told the tale: Another stop on Hollywood’s erstwhile schmooze circuit has been gone since late April, and will stay gone unless the proprietor can come up with back rent and renegotiate the lease on a diner that’s marked the seaside end of Santa Monica Canyon since 1973. (There’s a GoFundMe campaign to help.)
Maybe it’s just part of the general Restaurant Apocalypse. Within a hundred yards of Patrick’s, Tallula’s, Mason and The Hungry Cat are all closed and empty.

The 1962 war epic "The Longest Day" starred the infamously brusque John Wayne as Lieutenant Colonel Benjamin H. Vandervoort, a real-life American soldier who was present for the titular "day," aka D-Day. Wayne was 55 at the time of filming, however, making him a full 28 years older than Vandervoort was on June 6, 1944. Wayne was still a major star, though, so the filmmakers simply had to ignore the massive age gap.
The studios also had to begrudgingly pay Wayne a massive $250,000 for his work, which was 10 times larger than most of the film's other stars. It seems that Wayne sought such a high salary not because of greed or ego, but out of spite. Wayne, you see, had a beef with 20th Century Fox executive Daryl F. Zanuck, and the actor wanted to actively butt heads with the CEO. It wasn't that Wayne wanted the money, he just wanted to make sure that Zanuck didn't have it.

Forget about all the studio-thrown premiere after-parties at prior Cannes, from Paramount’s Rocketman with Elton John performing at the beach, and Warner Bros’ Elvis which touted a King of Rock ‘n’ Roll drone show. amfAR’s annual gala, this year counting 30 years, blew them all away, capped off early Friday Am by a mind-blowing mini-concert by Cher who got the crowd on its feet after a four-hour auction with such hits as “Believe” and “If I Could Turn Back Time” and covers of Abba’s “Waterloo” and Marc Cohn’s “Walking in Memphis”. Vocally and in regards to sheer stage dynamic, Cher, at 78, is a force to be reckoned with; delivering a truly unforgettable pitch-perfect performance.

The 2024 Cannes Film Festival is still going full steam, with deals and screenings galore. We’ve got the first responses to some highly anticipated projects including the new films from Emma Stone and Nicolas Cage, a filmmaker weighing in on the Harvey Weinstein conviction reversal and a studio going all in on a single filmmaker.
“Kinds of Kindness” Confounds
Yorgos Lanthimos, just a few months since his bizarre, female-empowerment madcap science fiction movie “Poor Things” scooped up four Oscars (including Best Actress for Emma Stone), debuted his new film, “Kinds of Kindness.”
The movie reunites the filmmaker with his frequent writing partner, Efthimis Filippo, and his muse, Emma Stone. The movie is not a straightforward narrative but an anthology film comprised of three loosely connected storylines, where the actors play different characters in each segment. (This is Searchlight’s big summer movie; it’s going up against the new “Quiet Place” prequel.

French cinema’s Judith Godrèche, a former child star-turned-filmmaker and prominent #MeToo activist, weighed in during Cannes Day 4 on the April 25 reversal of Harvey Weinstein’s rape conviction in New York, slamming it as “an absolute nightmare.”

“It’s a nightmare, an absolute nightmare. I can’t even imagine,” Godrèche said. “Somehow people [like] him are winning. There is enough pain and hurt that it should not be allowed. As much as I roll my eyes at Joe Russo blaming Marvel's pandemic-era box office woes on the children, he's right about one thing: Hollywood, like the world at large, is at a crossroads at the time of this writing. Superhero films, which have been the bread and butter of the industry for most of the 21st century, are no longer a reliable draw. We also find ourselves in a curious place where franchise fatigue seems to be settling in, yet it remains challenging for anything that isn't based on an IP to find financial success. At the same time, the growing popularity of smaller and scrappier fare from studios like A24 could point to a way forward.
It's a lot like the 1960s, when you think about it. By the end of that decade, the American New Wave was in full swing.

Since 2017 we’ve been watching two-time Oscar winner Kevin Spacey’s fall from grace unfold after several men accused the actor of s*xual assault and inappropriate behavior. Although the jury in the US found Spacey not liable in actor Anthony Rapp’s civil suit over the molestation allegation and dismissed the particular lawsuit against him, the actor is still facing ongoing legal battles in London.

The accusations against former producer Harvey Weinstein resulted in a series of similar cases in Hollywood, one of which was opened against two-time Oscar winner Kevin Spacey, who was then earning praise for his work on the series House of Cards. Spacey was first accused of inappropriate behavior by actor Anthony Rapp, after which 15 other alleged victims came forward. Several cases were opened, and Spacey was tried in both the United States and the United Kingdom, but as it turned out, Spacey was cleared of all the charges made against him, which led to a series of reactions.
Namely, as you might have assumed, Kevin Spacey was blacklisted completely and his career was destroyed because of these proceedings. No one wanted to hire him and while he himself decided to withdraw from the public, the actor had vehemently denied the allegations, especially those of a criminal nature.
So, what actually happened there?...

Update: In his first mainstream television interview in years (excerpted by THR), Kevin Spacey sat down with Chris Cuomo on NewsNation to address what’s being seen as resistance (by some) to his return to acting. While he acknowledges those who have supported him, such as Neeson and Stone, he blames fear for the fact that many have only reached out to him privately rather than publically. “But there are also people that I’ve spoken to who, they love me, they believe in me. They’ve stood with me in private… but they’re afraid to stand up. And I’ve been very fortunate that people have been honest with me about that. And I think that’s a shame, that we’ve come to a place as a society where people are afraid to say what they believe and what they feel because they’re afraid they’re going to get canceled too.

Sharon Stone, Liam Neeson and more actors are coming to the defense of Kevin Spacey and calling for his return to the industry at large. Spacey has not worked in Hollywood since being accused by several men of sexual misconduct starting in 2017. The two-part documentary “Spacey Unmasked” recently aired in the U.K. and is now streaming on Max and features previously unheard of testimonies about Spacey’s alleged sexual misconduct, including a claim that he allegedly groped another “House of Cards” actor on set.
In statements given to The Telegraph, Stone and Neeson were joined by the likes of Stephen Fry and F. Murray Abraham in their calls for Spacey’s return. Abraham himself was accused of sexual misconduct during the production of the Apple TV+ series “Mythic Quest,” which reportedly led to his firing.
“I can’t wait to see Kevin back at work. He is a genius.

Last night during Disney's 2024 Upfronts presentation, we finally got release dates for Agatha All Along and Daredevil: Born Again, as well as confirmation that Ironheart will debut on Disney+ sometime in 2025.

Different versions of the teasers are sure to be officially released before too long, but for now, we have a breakdown of the footage (via IGN).

Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli hired an American, Steve Alpert, as the head of its international division in 1996. His main duties involved the translation of Ghibli’s projects for the English-speaking audience. In his memoir, Sharing a House with the Never-Ending Man, Alpert detailed his experience working with Miyazaki. He also told the story about how Harvey Weinstein’s Miramax posed a problem for his first Ghibli project, Princess Mononoke.

However, Alpert did not have to single-handedly deal with Miramax to save Miyazaki’s film as he had help from screenwriter Neil Gaiman. Gaiman was hired by the studio to write the English-language screenplay of the film.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D) said the city’s corrections officials “will be ready” to hold former President Donald Trump at the notorious Rikers Island prison, known as one of the worst in the United States, should the judge in his hush-money case send him there.

Adams acknowledged that while dealing with hypothetical situations is not ideal, the city’s law enforcement entities must be prepared for any possibility. Trump currently faces trial in Manhattan on 34 counts of falsifying business records related to alleged hush money...

A few months ago, I wrote an article listing ten movies that – despite being well known – were difficult to find (legally) on any streaming service or even on disc. Those titles ranged from Ron Howard’s Cocoon to movies like Dawn of the Dead (the original). In the comments, many of our readers chimed in with their two cents on films they’ve found difficult to find over the years, so here are a few more challenging-to-find flicks, some of which may surprise you.

Harvey Weinstein will remain in a New York jail as a court mulls his possible extradition to California while he awaits the start of his rape case retrial, The Associated Press reports.
Weinstein returned to court in New York Thursday, May 9, for a brief hearing on the extradition. While the New York courts decide whether convicted rapist Harvey Weinstein should return to California while he awaits a retrial for his overturned 2020 conviction, the former movie mogul will remain jailed in the Empire State, it was decided on Thursday.
The courts must decide if Weinstein, who was previously convicted on rape charges in two separate trials in New York and California, should stay in a New York jail while he awaits the retrial in the former rape case, which has been planned to begin after Labor Day; his conviction was overturned on April 25 in a shock 4-3 decision by the New York State Court of Appeals. The second option for the courts is to ship the 72-year-old back to California, where he would begin serving his 16-year prison sentence, which came after a dramatic 2022 trial in L.A.

A federal judge dismissed a sexual assault lawsuit filed against CEO Neil Portnow in 2023 over a week after the Jane Doe accuser who filed the suit requested the dismissal.
The accuser’s allegations against Portnow first surfaced in January 2020 as part of his successor Deborah Dugan’s discrimination complaint with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission after she was ousted just over a week before the 62nd Grammy Awards.
While Portnow called the sexual assault accusations “ludicrous and untrue” amid the Dugan lawsuit, the Jane Doe plaintiff — described only as a...

A member of the Recording Academy who claimed Neil Portnow, former head of the Grammy Awards, drugged and raped her in a New York hotel in 2018 has asked the court to dismiss her lawsuit.
The move is a result of a looming court order that would force the woman to publicly reveal her identity.
In a letter sent to the court on Saturday, the woman said she was concerned about her privacy and safety. She also pointed to a conflict with her lawyer over communication issues and a “misrepresentation” that could have “significant implications for the case,” though he challenged Portnow’s motion to require her to use her real name just days before she voluntarily moved to dismiss the lawsuit.
On Monday, Jeffrey Anderson moved to withdraw as her lawyer in the case. He cited “irreconcilable differences” over the woman filing a letter to the court requesting dismissal of her case without his knowledge.

In a surprising moment during a regularly scheduled press briefing about public safety statistics, the Columbia University protests, migrant centers, the proliferation of illegal weed shops and Mayor Eric Adams’ upcoming trip to meet the Pope in Rome, a curveball question pressed Adams on the possible, if unlikely, jailing of former President Donald Trump.
Asked whether New York City’s Rikers Island complex would be prepared to handle the jailing of Trump, or if the city had any plans in place for such a situation, Adams said the city’s corrections officials “will be ready.”
“Our amazing [Department of Corrections Commissioner Lynelle Maginley-Liddie], she is prepared for whatever comes on Rikers Island,” Adams told reporters. “I’m pretty sure she would be prepared to manage and deal with the situation.
“As you see with what’s happening with Harvey Weinstein,” Adams continued, “we have to adjust. In this business, particularly around law enforcement, we have to...

The April 25 decision by the New York Court of Appeals to overturn Harvey Weinstein’s felony sex crime conviction looked like a major blow to the #MeToo movement in the U.S. and to the progress made within the U.S. film industry since 2017 (when the first allegations against Weinstein were made public).
In France, they are still waiting for that first wave of progress. The outrage triggered by #MeToo echoed across la grande nation — it even spawned a French counterpart, #Balancetonporc, or “Expose Your Pig” — but, until very recently, efforts to challenge the structure of the French entertainment industry came to very little.
That, it seems, is changing. U.S.-style measures, including the use of intimacy coordinators for sex scenes or chaperones to supervise the treatment of minors, are slowly becoming standard practice on French movie sets. #MeToo is “really at the center of our discussion now, in...

Quentin Tarantino does not view Kill Bill as two separate films. That should be acknowledged upfront as fair. After all, it is this detail which allows Tarantino the ability to claim Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood as his ninth instead of 10th film (thereby delaying any obligatory early retirements). And to be sure, Tarantino shot Kill Bill as one epic vision that was only encouraged to be broken up by, ahem, Harvey Weinstein while Tarantino was finishing up principal photography.
So while the story was released as Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and Kill Bill: Vol. 2, they’re two sides of the same tale. Be that as it may, there’s no denying that they’re two incredibly different sides. Whether a creative choice made in post-production after realizing he had hours more of running time to play with, or because the filmmaker was already at his most indulgent...

Imagine what it was like in the 1990s -- and being constantly told and reminded that Tarantino was revolutionizing cinema.
Not only was Quentin Tarantino's indie project being worshiped by film critics in 1994, but it was also being staged as the antithesis to the year's other subversive comedy, Forrest Gump, starring Tom Hanks.
Forrest Gump represented traditional values and innocence. (Though screenwriter Eric Roth nor Winston Groom ever intended the character that way)
Pulp Fiction represented cynicism and brutality triumphing over good intentions. It was an Oscar race partly conceived by Miramax and Harvey Weinstein, who, believe it or not, used to be good at other things besides...well, you know.
It was impossible for Gen X not to embrace Pulp Fiction as their generation's movie and the one that most spoke to their maturing culture. Maybe amid the media storm, I was the only one who saw what was happening.

Variety held their annual Power of Women event Thursday, May 2 at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum, in New York City. Honorees included Anitta, Mariska Hargitay, Shonda Rhimes, and Amy Schumer, along with presenters that included Glenn Close, Bela Bajaria, Bruna Marquezine, and Sascha Seinfeld.
IndieWire caught up with Francesca Scorsese, who’s featured as an “Up Next” talent in Variety’s issue, on the event’s red carpet, where she reflected on working with Luca Guadagnino in HBO’s 2020 limited series “We Are Who We Are.” “He’s the most amazing, sweetest guy. Very eccentric, but that’s the best part about him,” Scorsese said. “It was really cool because I got to experience another filmmaker. You know what I mean? I grew up being on my dad’s film sets and seeing his directing style and just like literally just like living in that world.”

In October 2017, Hollywood became the story. The New York Times’ blockbuster investigation of Harvey Weinstein shook the entertainment industry, unleashing a torrent of stories about harassment, abusive bosses, and exploitative power dynamics. The vast majority of victims who came forward were women, but just three weeks into what is now known as the #MeToo era, actor Anthony Rapp (Rent, Star Trek: Discovery) spoke out against Kevin Spacey, accusing the Oscar winner of drunkenly molesting him when he was 14 years old. Rapp said he wanted to “shine another light on the...

Peter Jackson once contemplated erasing his memory about The Lord of the Rings trilogy. Being an avid fan of J. R. R. Tolkien’s novels, the filmmaker crafted a cinematic world that captivated audiences globally and has since become one of the most influential franchises.

While his films have been a source of joy for fans worldwide, the filmmaker himself never had the opportunity to enjoy the trilogy like an ordinary viewer. And his desire for an unspoiled viewing experience for the film prompted Jackson to consider hypnosis to forget everything about Middle Earth.

Peter Jackson’s iconic The Lord of the Rings Trilogy is probably one of the greatest trilogy ever made. Starring an ensemble cast of several actors and a thousand extras, Jackson had an ambitious project on his hands.
During the auditioning of the film, MCU star Jake Gyllenhaal also auditioned for the role of a Hobbit in the film. Not putting effort into his acting and not doing a British accent, Peter Jackson had some harsh words for Gyllenhaal back in the day!

“Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” star Mariska Hargitay gave a powerful speech on Thursday in New York during Variety‘s Power of Women event, presented by Lifetime. The two-time Emmy winner, who celebrated 25 years of “Svu” this year, was honored at the event for her work as an advocate for sexual assault survivors.
Hargitay took the stage at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum following an introduction by her close friend, Glenn Close. After many years of acting, “she still finds the heart, the art and the power in her craft,” Close said of Hargitay.
With the New York rape conviction for Harvey Weinstein recently overturned, Hargitay themed her speech around the impossibility of reversing her own strongly-held convictions about listening to survivors and fighting back.

Harvey Weinstein will be retried in New York on rape and sexual offence charges after his 23-year conviction was overturned on appeal, Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said on Wednesday.
The disgraced 72-year old former Hollywood titan appeared in court in a wheelchair wearing a blue suit and according to reports did not speak in a brief hearing. Reports said Attorney Gloria Allred and Weinstein accuser Jessica Mann attended the hearing.
Prosecutors said there was nothing consensual about Weinstein’s conduct in reference to prior charges that led to the original conviction in February 2020, and told Judge Curtis Farber they would be proceeding.

Harvey Weinstein is expected to stand trial again in New York after his previous conviction was overturned by New York’s top appeals court.
Weinstein appeared in court today, May 1 for a hearing, his first time appearing in New York court since he was convicted back in 2020. Weinstein was in a wheelchair and was seated next to his lawyer Arthur Aidala, who told the court Weinstein has “very, very serious medical issues” but is still mentally sharp and could end up testifying on his own behalf in a new trial.
Judge Curtis Faber set a hearing for discovery for May 29, at which point prosecutors will also file a certificate of compliance. If filed by that date, the judge expects a trial could begin at some point after Labor Day.
Jessica Mann, one of the women who testified in the original case against Weinstein, was also present in the courthouse on Wednesday.

Harvey Weinstein is looking at a new trial in New York after Labor Day.
The former Hollywood mogul appeared in court in New York Wednesday for the first time since his 2020 rape conviction was overturned. Judge Curtis Farber set a May 29 hearing for discovery and for prosecutors to file a certificate of compliance. If the certificate is filed by that date, the judge anticipated that a trial will begin sometime after Labor Day.
Weinstein was wheeled into the courtroom in a wheelchair, wearing a blue suit with an American flag pin, after having been hospitalized in the days leading up to the hearing. He waved to the first row of attorneys as he was wheeled in and shook their hands as he was wheeled out. He appeared with his attorney Arthur Aidala, in front of a full audience, including Jessica Mann, who testified in the first New York trial.

Harvey Weinstein appeared in a Manhattan courtroom Wednesday, less than a week after the New York Court of Appeals overturned his 2020 rape conviction. It’s the first time the former movie producer has been seen in public since he was convicted of rape in a Los Angeles court and sentenced to 16 years in prison in February 2023.
Weinstein was seated in a wheelchair and wheeled by a security guard into a courtroom packed with journalists, lawyers and other officials. Lawyer Gloria Allred and Weinstein accuser Jessica Mann were present in the room. Prosecutor Nicole Blumberg from the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office said they will seek a retrial in the fall.
“[Mann] wants everyone to know the truth, and the defendant may have power and privilege, but she has the truth,” Blumberg said, adding they “have every reason to believe” Weinstein will be convicted in a retrial.

“We believe in this case, and we will be retrying this case,” prosecutors in Harvey Weinstein’s New York rape case told a judge today in the first hearing since the much-accused producer’s 2020 conviction was overturned last week. “It was a strong case in 2020 …and it remains a strong case in 2024,” added Assistant District Attorney Nicole Blumberg.
Weinstein was sitting in the courtroom as the officials from the Manhattan District Attorney’s office announced their intention to take the case back to a jury. The trial could begin as quickly as September, if room can be found on the court calendar.
“We are happy to hear that the prosecutors want a speedy trial,” Weinstein chief attorney Arthur Aidala told the court as he once again proclaimed his client’s innocence. “It’s a new trial, it’s a new day … his life is on the line.”
