Bob Rosenthal, who founded Formosa Group in 2013 and stunned many in the community when he suddenly resigned in the spring of 2023, is returning to the postproduction sound company as president.
The company, which started as an independent entity, is a division of parent company Streamland, whose brands also include Picture Shop and Picture Head. On the heels of Rosenthal’s resignation, company employees had petitioned Streamland, asking it to keep Formosa Group under Rosenthal’s leadership.
“The company was conceived as a singular destination for artists to render their inspiring work within a collaborative and supportive home,” said Rosenthal in a released statement. “Based upon our incredibly talented artists and our dedicated and dynamic leadership team, Formosa Group has established a distinctive environment to best serve content creator’s ideas and attract incredible talent. I am anxious to return to the people I cherish and the company I revere.”

“Dune” (Warner Bros.) was the big live action sound mixing winner Saturday night at 58th annual Cinema Audio Society Awards at the InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown. Coupled with last week’s Mpse Golden Reel win for feature effects/foley sound editing, Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi epic is on track for the Oscar sound win next Sunday.
“Dune” was the frontrunner from the outset for its sonic power and complexity. Its great achievement is creating a grounded reality that is both innovative and believable. So, rather than relying on over-hyped sounds, the teams conveyed an otherworldly palette that is hallucinatory yet gritty, from supernatural voices that rattle the mind to colossal sandworms that shake the sand dunes of Arrakis.
Meanwhile, the animation win went to Disney’s “Encanto,” the Oscar favorite for animated feature. Likewise, another Oscar favorite, “Summer of Soul” (Searchlight Pictures), grabbed documentary. The non-theatrical winner was HBO’s...

Well, if you depend on the guilds and societies to help you predict your Oscar ballots the Cinema Audio Society (Cas) and Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild handed out their awards last night adding a little fuel to the fire. I think most people have American Sniper taking the Sound Mixing award at the Oscars, but if you want to go the way of the Cas you'll be putting Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) on that top line. Sound mixers Thomas Varga, Jon Taylor, Frank A. Montano, Gustavo Borner, Jason Oliver and John Sanacore took home the Cas Award for best live action sound editing while the animated award went to the team behind Big Hero 6 -- Gabriel Guy, David Fluhr, Alan Meyerson and Mary Jo Lang. Capping off a busy night for awards in the run-up to the 87th annual Oscars, the Cinema Audio Society (Cas) awarded the sound mixing team of "Birdman" top honors Saturday night. "Sherlock," "Game of Thrones" and "Modern Family" won in the TV categories. Clint Eastwood's war film "American Sniper" is considered the favorite to win the comparable Best Sound Mixing Oscar, though "Birdman" was nominated by the Academy's sound branch as well and, indeed, could be formidable if it is the industry favorite the guild awards have suggested it is so far. "Whiplash," also Oscar-nominated, won the BAFTA prize. "Interstellar" and "Unbroken" are also up for the Academy Award, each of them nominated by Cas as well. Six of the last eight Cas winners have won the sound mixing Oscar. Check out the full list of Cas winners below, nominees here and the rest of the season's offerings at The Circuit.

Nominations have been announced for the 51st annual Cinema Audio Society Awards, and as ever with this group lately, there are a few surprises. For instance, "Unbroken" made the cut despite being mostly ignored by the guilds and industry groups so far, and Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy" showed up as well. The biggest jaw-dropper might just be that after months of being the poster child for sound complaints, somehow, some way, "Interstellar" ended up in the mix (no pun intended). There are always one or two that drop out, however. Last year, for example, another Marvel movie — "Iron Man 3" — was chalked up here. But it fell out in favor of "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" with the Academy. I find myself wondering if "The Battle of the Five Armies" could make the cut this year as it's even more of an action/sound film than the last.

Whether you knew it or not, you've been listening to sound mixer David Macmillan's work for years. There's early stuff, like "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," "Birdy" and "SpaceCamp" (yes!). There's recent stuff like "Twilight," "Hancock" and "The 40-Year-Old-Virgin." And there's the Oscar-winning stuff scattered throughout, like "The Right Stuff," "Speed" and "Apollo 13." The guy is a legend in the field, so of course he's a great fit for the Cinema Audio Society's (Cas) Career Achievement Award. Macmillan began his career over half a century ago as an apprentice in Canadian television before eventually connecting with Francis Ford Coppola. The "Godfather" director was in the process of building American Zoetrope in San Francisco and hired Macmillan to run the company's mixing facility. From there, his career took off. He has more than 80 feature films to his credit, the three aforementioned Oscars (he won every time he was nominated), collaborations with Oliver Stone,...

Today was a busy day for some of the smaller guilds with the Visual Effects Society, the Cinema Audio Society, and the Makeup and Hairstylists Guilds all announcing their nominations for 2013.
First, we have the Ves, whose main category to look at is “Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature Motion Picture,” where we find Gravity and four other nominees that are just going to have to be happy with the fact that they got nominated. This is perhaps the easiest category to call in the entirety of awards season, and I don’t mean just here, but for the Oscar as well (Last year’s winner, Life of Pi, easily took this category before going on to claim the Oscar). Yes yes yes..I know..we entertained this subject last month. However, in the tradition of Post, I am following up last in the process!
This subject has been of particular interest to me, and has sparked a lot of interest among my colleagues in Post Production. Discussing spotting is a subject unto itself as we have seen with all the fascinating articles and comments these past weeks. The focus this time will be on the advantages, disadvantages, pluses and minuses of spotting a project with the Composer And the Sound Designer present with the Director. Sitting down in a room, all together, with the same goal in mind... helping the Director tell the story. On the surface, it seems like a no-brainer---why Not do this? Save time and energy; reduce the classic 'conflicts' during the final mix; The left hand knows what the right hand is going to do...

Collaboration is a word that certainly can be overused, and trivialized. But I think it can also have everything to do with success-- success of a project, success of a career, and success in life. We as creative artists sometimes get tunnel vision, or blinders while working. This can be both a benefit and a curse. The energy needed to create something from nothing needs to be tapped in ‘each person’s unique way’.
More on this after the jump...
Ultimately, sound, music, and picture are collaborations between many people on a team. All that matters are the results, not necessarily the methods, or the equipment. Do clients Really care what version of software you are using, or method of making or mixing sounds? (Yes, there are standards and an expected high level of expertise). But, as mentioned here on SCOREcast several times, people skills and delivering as promised are always the bottom line.

I cherish "verbal economy". Getting to the bottom of something — to the core level of it — while utilizing the smallest amount of verbiage possible is something that I am profoundly fascinated with. It drives me crazy when someone is trying to make a point, and instead of stating the main crux of their position, they wax on with twenty minutes of preamble.
So, I'll try my damnedest to make this intro quick and to the point.
I am supposed to talk to you today about "competition", but I don't want to, so I'm not going to. Instead, let's talk about what the very core of the word "competition" boils down to: winning and losing. And there's a lot to talk about.
Here's the deal: Right this very second, as you sit wherever you are and read this post, one of two things is taking place in your life. You are...
