For this month’s installment of “TV Terrors” we revisit one of the most iconic bits of horror movie marketing of all time: when Jason Voorhees took “The Arsenio Hall Show“!
The first time I ever saw the teaser for Jason Takes Manhattan was on the weekend of July 5, 1989. My dad had taken my little brother and I to see Weekend at Bernie’s, and while we were sitting through the trailers, Jason Voorhees suddenly popped up. It was that famed teaser that everyone remembers with Jason looking out onto the cityscape, promising a Friday the 13th sequel wherein Jason would quite literally slice and dice his way through New York City.
Although my parents strictly forbade us from watching Friday the 13th films at the time, I was utterly enamored with Jason Voorhees at just six years old. The teaser didn’t scare me, but it excited me, and ended...

Jon Stewart returned to his well-worn chair to host his weekly segment of The Daily Show Monday night, and in addition to weighing in on the latest political hot topics, he also took a quick trip down memory lane, guided by one of his audience members in his “After the Cut” question and answer series. The audience member in question informed Stewart that she had been a faithful viewer of his since his early ’90s MTV show, The Jon Stewart Show, and she wondered what he might’ve done differently in retrospect. “You watched that show?!” he asked the guest incredulously. The Jon Stewart Show was a half-hour talk show hosted by the eventual Emmy-winning emcee, but at the time he was not exactly a household name. The show only came to fruition after Arsenio Hall stepped away from The Arsenio Hall Show, and it ran for just two seasons...

Three former late-night stars — or, apparently, “kings” — are sharing a stage together later this year.
Jay Leno, Craig Ferguson, and Arsenio Hall are presenting a night of standup that’s being billed as the “Kings of Late Night.” The trio will perform at the retro-themed San Diego County Fair on June 21, and again at the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, CA, on September 28.
While some might hesitate to call anyone but Johnny Carson a “king” of the genre, the three comics are certainly some of the biggest names in late-night history.
Leno helmed NBC’s Tonight Show twice — from 1992-2009, and again from 2010-2014. Ferguson hosted the CBS 12:30 franchise The Late Late Show from 2005-2014, and Hall’s syndicated Arsenio Hall Show ran from 1989-1994, with a short-lived revival between 2013-2014.
While there are only two dates currently on the books, we could see more, as the three comics have hit the road together before.

The 75th Primetime Emmys was a somewhat predictable affair, with "Succession," "The Bear" and "Beef" winning nearly everything, but there was one creative choice that made it stand clearly above the Emmys of the past few years. The theme this time around was honoring the most beloved shows in TV history, which made for a far more interesting transition between awards than the usual random comedy schticks.
This year included the reunion of Jon Cryer and Holland Taylor from "Two and a Half Men," a speech from Arsenio Hall of "The Arsenio Hall Show," and another speech by Carol Burnett from "The Carol Burnett Show." We got an extended homage to "The Twilight Zone," as well as references to "Taxi," "Dynasty," and "Mad Men." There were also cast reunions for ongoing shows like "Grey's Anatomy" and "Always Sunny in Philadelphia." Considering how long they've been going on and the impact...

In honor of the Primetime Emmy Awards marking its 75th anniversary, castmembers from a number of notable series reunited to present awards at the ceremony that was held Monday at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. This included re-created sets for many of the celebrated shows.
Among the moments gathering buzz was a reunion for Ally McBeal stars Calista Flockhart, Greg Germann, Peter MacNicol, and Gil Bellows. The performers emerged from the show’s bathroom set to dance to “You’re the First, the Last, My Everything” by Barry White.
Also notable was Grey’s Anatomy gathering current and former stars Ellen Pompeo, James Pickens Jr. and Chandra Wilson with Katherine Heigl and Justin Chambers. “Yes, there have been some changes over the years, but the one...

While details as to Olayiwola’s role are under wraps, she’s part of an ensemble led by Dominique Thorne, which also includes Anthony Ramos, Shakira Barrera, Alden Ehrenreich and more. The six-episode series created by Chinaka Hodge sees Thorne reprise her Black Panther: Wakanda Forever role of Riri Williams, a genius inventor out of MIT who has created the most advanced suit of armor since Iron Man’s.
An actress, writer and comedian, Olayiwola is best known for her role as Bailiff Nikki in Amazon Freevee’s singular comedy series Jury Duty from creators Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, which went viral earlier this year and garnered three Emmy nominations including Outstanding Comedy Series. The 1980s was a golden era for TV animation. It was the decade of Thundercats, Inspector Gadget, Transformers, Ducktales, The Smurfs, He-Man and The Masters of the Universe, Care Bears, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Yet arguably, the best of them all was The Real Ghostbusters.
The show arrived at a time when studios were eager to translate box office gold into something palatable for younger audiences. It didn’t always quite go to plan, of course, as short-lived and ill-advised animated incarnations of everything from Rambo to The Karate Kid can attest.
But The Real Ghostbusters was different, running for 140 episodes across seven seasons.

Larry Charles’ résumé is all over the place. As a writer, he penned some of Seinfeld’s most memorable episodes (see: “The Library”). As a TV director, he skewered his industry with Curb Your Enthusiasm and Entourage. As a filmmaker, he embraced mockumentary with Borat and Brüno. But his latest entry, by his own admission, might be his most unhinged to date. He just released Dicks: The Musical, a hard-r spoof of The Parent Trap featuring telepathic sewer creatures, a disembodied CGI vagina and Megan Thee Stallion walking men on leashes like dogs. “I don’t have a legacy or body of work or anything like that, so I don’t think about stuff like that,” the Dicks director explained on the eve of its Oct. 6 theatrical launch. “I never know what I’m doing next.”

While Tamron Hall is the host of her successful, self-titled daytime talk show “Tamron Hall,” there was a hypothetical world in which she may have been part of the late-night TV landscape. But Hall told TheWrap she’s not convinced that idea would have gotten past network executives.
It’s something Hall thought about earlier on in her career, and one that was suggested to her prior to the launch of her now two-time Emmy-winning talk series.
“I have a former producer at MSNBC who always said, ‘You should be in late night, you should be in late night,'” Hall said. But she also mentioned that she didn’t think there would be as clear of a lane for her to pursue late night in comparison to other on-camera talents who come from a different background.

Sue Johanson, Canada’s most beloved and celebrated sex educator, has died. She was 93.
Johanson rose to fame first in Canada with her call-in radio and television programs, both titled Sunday Night Sex Show. A U.S. spinoff followed, called Talk Sex With Sue Johanson.
According to reports, Johanson died in a long-term care facility in Thornhill, Ont., surrounded by family.
Chances are if you grew up between the late 1980s and early 2000s, you’re familiar with Johanson.
Through her programs, she taught many Canadians how to have safe sex and, also, how to enjoy it. No topic was too tough or taboo for Johanson, and fans found her no-limits style refreshing and funny.
Johanson would wade into conversations, sometimes to the network’s chagrin, about anal and gay sex, fetishes and sexual issues in the queer community, all of which were often considered taboo topics when her show was on the air.

Halle Berry does not have time for social media trolls.
The actress took to social media over the weekend to share a snap of herself nude drinking wine on her balcony.
However, as per usual, some people online felt the need to respond with negative comments.
One person on Twitter wrote, “Imagine being in your 50s, still posting nudes for attention in menopause when you should be chilling with the grandkids. Aging with dignity is no longer a thing.”

It’s well after midnight somewhere off the coast of Florida, and Mojo Nixon is leading a cruise ship full of lubricated and rowdy country-music fans in a bawdy singalong of a song titled “Tie My Pecker to My Leg.”
We won’t get into the lyrics here, but the verses touch on everything from barnyard sex to fornicating at a county fair. “This guy just heard the song for the first time,” Nixon, 65, and dressed in his customary Hawaiian shirt and uneven denim cutoffs, says, pointing to a man in the front row.

Chris Rock got everything he wanted to say about the Will Smith slap at the 94th annual Academy Awards off his chest during his Netflix special.
On Saturday, the 58-year-old comedian performed his “Selective Outrage” stand-up special in Baltimore, live on Netflix, where he addressed the incident involving Smith a year later. “Selective Outrage” has been a long time coming. A source tells Et, Rock was focused on the comedy special for the past year and his hard work paid off and he can now “relax.”
“Everyone was very happy with how it turned out,” the source says, adding that Rock was “in his element and was calm and comfortable onstage.”

It’s been said that revenge is a dish best served cold, and that was proven in Chris Rock’s latest standup comedy special for Netflix, “Selective Outrage”.
Not only did “Selective Outrage” mark Netflix’s first-ever live global special, it was also the first time that Rock has publicly weighed in on being slapped across the face by Will Smith during the 2022 Oscars, and the comedian did not hold back.
“I’m going to try to do the show without offending anyone. Because you never know who might get triggered,” Chris said early in the show (via Variety), seemingly in reference to Smith.

Later, he addressed the elephant in the room. “You know what people say, they say, ‘words hurt,’” he joked. “Anybody that say words hurt has never been punched in the face.

Chris Rock tore into Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett Smith during his historic comedy special on Saturday while addressing the infamous slap at last year’s Oscar’s ceremony.
The 58-year-old comedian roasted Mr Smith over the moment in Netflix’s first ever live global streaming event, where he blamed the Hollywood power couple’s well-publicised marital issues.
“Will Smith practices selective outrage. Because everybody knows what the f*** happened,” Mr Rock said in an extended riff towards the end of the 70-minute special. “I didn’t have any entanglements. Will Smith’s wife was f**ing her son’s friend, Ok. Normally I would not talk about that s*** but for some reason (they) put that on the internet. We’ve all been cheated on. None of us have ever been interviewed by the person we cheated on on television. She hurt him way more than he hurt me.

Netflix just aired its first-ever live special, and from a pure production standpoint, it went off nearly without a hitch. "Chris Rock: Selective Outrage" will surely grab headlines for its final ten minutes, as the comedian capped off an intermittently funny hour with an extended tirade during which he delivered low blow after low blow aimed at Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. There's plenty to be said about those anger-filled moments and all the good, bad, and ugly that came before them (look out for more coverage from /Film that will dig into the details), but it's also worth unpacking the live production elements that mark a brand new step for the streaming giant. Did Netflix pull this whole thing off? Should they keep experimenting with live TV?

It's been close to a year since Chris Rock made a joke about Will Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith, at the Oscars and Smith slapped Rock on live TV in response. It was the slap heard 'round the world, leading to Smith's banning from the Academy Awards for a decade and launching a million think-pieces. The shocking event was not the first time Rock targeted the pair with his jokes, as he has been making comments about Pinkett-Smith since the 1990s, but things escalated after Pinkett-Smith suggested he shouldn't host the Oscars in 2016 as a part of the "#OscarsSoWhite" movement. There's a lot of bad blood between the comedian and the married actors that came to a head when Smith's hand connected with Rock's face on the Oscars stage.
Netflix debuted its first live-streaming stand-up special with "Chris Rock: Selective Outrage," promoting the special as the moment when Rock would finally respond to "The Slap.

It was the moment many had been waiting nearly a year for — a chance to hear just how Chris Rock would finally address Will Smith’s Oscar night smackdown of the comedian on the Academy stage with a slap that will live in infamy.
Perhaps because Rock knew much of the audience who tuned in were waiting for just that moment, he saved it toward near the end of his set Saturday night during Netflix’s much hyped first live special Chris Rock: Selective Outrage!
But when the moment finally came, Rock didn’t hold back — taking down Smith, dragging his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and targeting the couple’s marital issues (in which Pinkett Smith acknowledged a relationship with singer August Alsina as the couple addressed their marriage on an episode of Red Table Talk).
“Will Smith practices selective outrage,” Rock told the audience. “Outrage because everybody knows what the fuck happened.

In New York, everyone can hear you scream. But will they really care? In the city that never sleeps, evil lurks around every corner, ready to strike whenever one's guard is let down for just a moment. Sure, it's a gorgeous, bustling metropolis, but if horror movies have taught audiences anything, it's that the Big Apple packs some big scares. Tyler Gillett & Matt Bettinelli-Olpin surprised fans with their very funny, very bloody 2022 "Scream" reboot. For the sixth entry, the duo have supplanted Woodsboro, California, in favor of New York City, letting Ghostface get bigger, meaner, and deadlier.
Shooting in the actual city can be costly, likely accounting for just how few true New York horror stories there really are. Often, Manhattan is merely used as a backdrop, the horror features never fully taking advantage of the distinct iconography or scale for something truly terrifying. Jay Leno has returned to the stand-up stage just two weeks after he suffered brutal third-degree burns to his hands and face.
Leno drove himself to the sold-out Comedy and Magic Club show in Hermosa Beach, California. Of course, he immediately cracked jokes about his situation with photographers when he arrived outside the venue.
“We got two shows tonight — regular and extra crispy,” he quipped.
In Memoriam 2022: 100 Great Celebrities Who Died This Year!
The former Tonight Show host added, “I never thought of myself as a roast comic. Thank! Goodnight.” He grinned.
During his first show back, he joked about the fire, tried out some brand-new jokes and received a standing ovation from overjoyed fans.
On November 12, Leno was working under a car in his garage when a fuel leak and a spark caused a fire. He underwent many hyperbaric chamber sessions and two grafting procedures to treat his serious injuries.

The cliche holds that when a movie star attains a certain degree of success, they get bored or convinced of their own brilliance and say, "What I'd really like to do is direct."
Name a big-screen megastar from the last 75 years of filmmaking, and it's likely they followed through on this impulse. Marlon Brando, Paul Newman, Robert Redford, Burt Reynolds, Jack Nicholson, Kevin Costner, Denzel Washington... these men didn't become icons the world over because they lacked ambition. Once they racked up a few box office hits and maybe an Academy Award nomination or two, they surveyed the Hollywood landscape and saw many more worlds to conquer. Sometimes it goes poorly (Nicholson's "The Two Jakes"), sometimes it's a draw, and sometimes it's an Oscar jackpot (Redford's "Ordinary People" and Costner's "Dances with Wolves").
For Eddie Murphy, if we're going strictly by the finished product, his one and only directorial effort...

More than 13 years after we last saw Jason Voorhees creep around Camp Crystal Lake in Platinum Dunes’ soulless Friday the 13th remake (2009), the legal battles that prevented anyone else from claiming the hockey mask have apparently been settled—at least insofar as to allow Peacock to announce the upcoming Crystal Lake on the NBCUni streaming service.

Following news that a 100,000 settlement was reached due to a complaint that Bill Murray had allegedly acted inappropriately with a woman on the set of an upcoming movie, others have come forward with similar stories about the beloved “SNL” alum.
One of those people has been Geena Davis, who co-starred with Murray in the 1990 comedy “Quick Change”, revealing in her new memoir that she was asked to audition for Murray in his hotel room, where he “insisted” on using a “Thumper” massage device on her.
In a recent interview with British outlet i, Davis was reminded of a joint appearance she and Murray made on Arsenio Hall’s talk show to promote the film, when Murray repeatedly stroked her bare arm, and at one point playfully pulled down the strap of her dress.

When Full Frontal launched on TBS in 2016, host Samantha Bee’s publicity tour was dogged by questions about her show signifying a shift in the late night comedy space — a space dominated by white men named Jimmy.
It was a media obsession that she tweaked in the premiere, which began with faux reporters peppering her with queries like: “Is it hard breaking into the boys’ club?” and “What’s it like as a female woman?”
Full Frontal With Samantha Bee — an opportunity long overdue for a host who watched as a string of fellow Daily Show correspondents got their own platforms ahead of her — truly was a breakout. It won awards and prompted conversation and controversy.
Though white men named Jimmy still dominate, the late night landscape that Bee leaves now isn’t the same as the one she arrived in; it’s more inclusive.
