The X-Men are one step closer to joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe with their own movie.
Screenwriter Michael Lesslie (“The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes”) is in talks with Marvel Studios to write the first “X-Men” movie since the mutant superhero franchise was acquired by Disney in its purchase of 21st Century Fox in 2019.
As with every Marvel Studios film, Kevin Feige will produce, but nothing else about the film has been set, including director or cast. Marvel has been slowly seeding the MCU with mutants over the past two years, including brief mentions in 2022’s “Ms. Marvel” and “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever,” and appearances of the X-Men’s namesake and leader, Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart), in an alternative universe in 2022’s “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” and of Beast (Kelsey Grammer) in the post-credits sequence of 2023’s “The Marvels.”

Fresh off his latest BAFTA win for The Sixth Commandment, Timothy Spall’s next project has been revealed.
The Harry Potter star is leading Death Valley with Welsh actress Gwyneth Keyworth (Black Mirror) for the BBC.
Written and created by Paul Doolan (Mammoth) and set in Wales, Death Valley follows the unlikely crime-solving partnership between eccentric national treasure John Chapel (Spall), a retired actor and star of hit fictional detective TV show Caesar, and disarming detective sergeant Janie Mallowan (Keyworth). Thrown together by the murder of John’s neighbor, John and Janie are an odd, yet hilarious duo with opposing instincts, and each week they get to the bottom of gripping murders.
“I’m really looking forward to teaming up with the brilliant Gwyneth Keyworth and the fantastically talented team of creatives and technicians on this new and unique comedy drama,” said Spall.
BBC Studios is producing and distributing, and filming will begin next month.

In the hit TV series, Spall and Esther Smith play a couple who have endured the pain of infertility. And now it turns out they’re having a real-life baby together. The proud dad-to-be reveals all
As the fourth season of Trying lands, things have moved on a lot for the sparky everycouple, played by Rafe Spall and Esther Smith. Their painful journey through infertility, from season one, is long behind them. The two kids they adopted tortuously through seasons two and three, Princess and Tyler, are now cranky, wisecracking youths.
Princess, now played by Scarlett Rayner, is especially good. “It’s always surprising how good young people are at acting,” Rafe Spall says, when I meet him in a cafe in London. Two of Britain’s biggest stars won top honors at the BAFTA TV Awards on Sunday: Timothy Spall finally prevailed in the Best Actor race after three previous bids while Sarah Lancashire collected a bookend Best Actress award for the third and final season of “Happy Valley”; she’d won for season 2 back in 2017 and has a supporting prize for “Last Tango in Halifax” as well.
Backstage, Spall readily admitted, “I’m over the moon about this. I just am. So often the bridesmaid, today I catch the bouquet.” He then pondered the importance and meaning of awards ceremonies. “When you keep losing them, you think they’re a load of bollocks. And then you win and you think well, actually… Really, I suppose, in a way, they are both — they’re magnificent and they are an in-house thing. The 2024 BAFTA TV Awards very much celebrated the best of British TV tonight as the majority of big-name stars and more recognizable shows fell away to British shows and stars. The likes of “Succession” and “The Last of Us” went home empty-handed at the Royal Festival Hall. “Top Boy,” “The Sixth Commandment,” and “Such Brave Girls” claimed the three big prizes at the ceremony hosted by comedians Romesh Ranganathan and Rob Beckett.
“Top Boy,” Netflix’s hit show about two London drug dealers dealing with gang violence in East London, won Best Drama Series over “The Gold,” “Happy Valley,” and Emmy hopeful “Slow Horses.” Producers Charles Steel and Alasdair Flind came backstage to discuss their victory, which came for the fifth and final season of the fan favorite.

Awards season may well be over for another year in the world of film, with the Oscars, BAFTAs, and Golden Globes just a distant memory now. But on Sunday evening, one of the biggest nights in British TV, the BAFTA TV Awards — this year hosted by comedians Rob Beckett and Ramesh Ranganathan — took place at London’s Royal Festival Hall. And on a night where the two most nominated shows, Black Mirror and The Crown, failed to snag a single win, Happy Valley, Top Boy, and The Sixth Commandment enjoyed great success in key categories, each taking home two awards apiece.
On the night, Sarah Lancashire won Leading Actress for her all-timer of a turn as police sergeant Catherine Cawood in Happy Valley, her second BAFTA for the same role. The show also snagged the public-voted Memorable Moment award for Catherine and Tommy Lee Royce’s (James Norton) remarkable final kitchen showdown.

Updated with complete winners list: Despite being up for four acting category awards, The Crown‘s final season left the BAFTA TV Awards empty handed tonight in London.
Elizabeth Debicki, Lesley Manville, Salim Daw and Dominic West were all snubbed, as the the likes of Matthew Macfadyen, Jasmine Jobson, Timothy Spall and Sarah Lancashire all triumphed and the Netflix show went out quietly.
There was also a major surprise in the International category, where little-known French drama Class Act beat the likes of Beef, The Bear and The Last of Us to win the prize. Among the most shocked was the show’s star Laurent Lafitte, who urged the audience to find and watch his show — to the amusement of the audience.

Timothy Spall has won the BAFTA TV Award for Leading Actor this evening, beating out top-name competition.
Spall emerged as the winner ahead of Brian Cox for Succession, Dominic West for The Crown, Kane Robinson for Top Boy, Papa Essiedu for The Lazarus Project and Steve Coogan for The Reckoning.
Lashana Lynch presented the British actor with the prize.
His win meant The Crown went home empty-handed despite being up for four acting awards and a number of others.
In true-crime drama The Sixth Commandment, from Wild Mercury Productions and True Vision Productions, aired on BBC1 last July in the UK. It starred Spall as university lecturer, Peter Farquhar, who was manipulated and eventually murdered by his former student and lodger, Ben Field, who was played by Éanna Hardwicke, nominated earlier today in the Best Supporting Actor category.

The second half of the British Emmys — the BAFTA TV Awards — are about to kick off. The first segment took place at the end of April when the BAFTA TV Craft Awards gave out gongs for below-the-line artists nominated for their work in this year’s best TV shows. Now, the main ceremony is taking place. This one is where all the big stars rock up as the acting categories are presented tonight in what is a live, televised ceremony broadcast from the Royal Festival Hall on London’s South Bank.
The stars are decorating the red carpet thickly and fastly while the sweat drips from the brows of our journalists just as thick and fast. It’s sweltering here in London. Props, then, must go to “The Hobbit” star Richard Armitage, who dons a pink velvet suit jacket. Velvet is a brave choice in such hot weather but he looks dashing as anything.

It was a night of surprises at the BAFTA TV Awards, with “The Crown” and “Black Mirror” failing to pick up any awards while “Succession” walked away with only one for Matthew Macfadyen for best supporting actor.
Macfadyen did not attend the awards at London’s Royal Festival Hall, prompting Helena Bonham Carter, who presented the category, to walk off with the iconic gold BAFTA mask with the promise she would get it to Macfadyen.
The international category also saw upset, with frontrunners “Succession,” “Beef” and “The Bear” all failing to win the award. They were instead beaten by little-known French series “Class Act.” It was a fact acknowledged by the show’s shocked lead actor Laurent Lafitte, who, upon accepting the award, told the audience: “Please watch our show. It’s called ‘Class Act,’ it’s quite good — not just because I’m starring in it.”

Hiroyuki Sanada has been honing his acting skills for over fifty years, having started when he was six years old. He landed his first role opposite the celebrated Japanese actor and martial artist Sonny Chiba in Game of Chance. Since then, the Tokyo-born actor, 63, has barely decelerated.

Unfortunately, the 10-episode series is over, but he has starred in a number of similar flicks that are well worth your time.
Nevertheless, Sanada’s résumé includes a number of stellar but lesser-known roles. Rest assured, if you enjoy his portrayal of Lord Toranaga, here are three must-see films starring the talented actor that will satisfy your craving for more of his compelling performances.

Celebration of cinema has always been extended by the Oscars honoring the prowess of cinematic excellence with one of the most recognized accolades. Throughout the rich history of cinema, there have been several movies based on true events, that left a mark among moviegoers or in the pages of history.
A still from Lawrence of Arabia
Also, movies that are based on true events are another way of documenting the particular incident, albeit a portion of fictionalization may alter the accuracy, but for cinema’s sake, filmmakers enjoy the basic freedom to have their own touch to the narrative. Throughout history, movies like The Great Ziegfeld by Robert Z. Leonard, or it would be criminal not to mention David Lean’s Lawrence of Arabia, and several other movies have claimed the Best Picture Oscars. Here is a list of six movies that won an Oscar in the Best Picture category.

Sony Pictures Classics’ Wicked Little Letters grossed an estimated $1.5+ million in a big second week expansion for the R-rated British period comedy to 1,000 screens from five. The Thea Sharrock-directed film starring Olivia Colman (also a producer) and Jessie Buckley, no. 8 at the domestic weekend box office, has a $1.6+ million cume.
Colman and Buckley have been out actively promoting the film, based on an actual scandal, about a police investigation into the anonymous author of crude letters sent to the residents of a British seaside town.
The number is on the high end of SPC’s expectations, and the Sunday estimate may be conservative.
Audiences for Wicked Little Letters are 60% female, 40% male, with a range of women age 30-plus, unusual for a period film as they skew older. It’s playing especially well in major cities and college towns but also popping in smaller markets like Seattle. Word of mouths is terrific,...

Wicked Little Letters is one of those truth-stranger-than-fiction tales that remind us that people are weirder than we might think. Director Thea Sharrock opens her comedy/mystery tale with text informing us “more of this is true than you might think,” a comic mystery about on the sudden appearance of anonymous obscene letters sent to various residents of a quiet of early 1920s little British seaside town. The first victim is Edith Swan (Olivia Colman), prim and proper religious spinster who still lives with her parents, and who embodies the last-gasp of the Victorian era ideal of a quiet obedient woman against those uppity women demanding the vote. Suspicion quickly falls on Edith’s neighbor, a foul-mouthed new arrival from Ireland, Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley), who has a daughter Nancy (Alisha Weir), and...

Coleman is Edith, a mousey British woman who lives with her parents and espouses Christian values as her facade. Her neighborhood is disrupted when a saucy war widow named Rose (Jessie Buckley) moves in with a daughter and lover, and espouses a filterless and authentic cussing-like-a-sailor persona. When Rose begins to charm the neighborhood, it coincides with a number of poison pen letters Edith begins to receive, using swear-word language similar to the rhythms of Rose’s speech. Edith’s Dad Edward (Timothy Spall) has Rose arrested, and everyone assumes her guilt except for a handful of neighbors and a woman police officer named Gladys (Anjana Vasan). As the trial approaches,...

The long-awaited adaptation of Hilary Mantel’s novel “The Mirror and the Light” has wrapped.
In the first images from the production, released by the BBC and Masterpiece PBS, Kate Phillips can be seen reprising her role as King Henry VIII’s third wife Jane Seymour, while Mark Rylance returns as the king’s chief advisor Thomas Cromwell and Damien Lewis as the king himself.
Based on the final novel in Mantel’s award-winning “Wolf Hall” trilogy, which follows the rise and fall of Cromwell, the new images come some 18 months after Mantel’s sudden death at the age of 70.

There’s a reason “Wicked Little Letters” lured the A-list cast that British comedian and TV scribe Jonny Sweet (“Chickens”) and theater/film director Thea Sharrock (“The Hollow Crown”) dreamed about, including Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley.
Sweet pitched the idea to StudioCanal’s Nicola Shindler, who took him on as a film writer even though he’d only done TV. His first movie script was so funny that when Shindler sent it to Colman, the Oscar-winner (“The Favourite”) signed on right away to play Edith, a proper village spinster living at home who goes to the police after receiving a series of scatologically creative hate letters in the post. Who could resist language like “you foxy-ass piss-country whore?”
That got the ball rolling: Soon, Timothy Spall joined the cast as Edith’s misogynistic father, steeped in old-school patriarchal ways, along with Jessie Buckley as Rose, Edith’s brash, Irish,...

In the quiet little English hamlet of Littlehampton, someone has been sending out anonymous letters to their fellow townsfolk. Not just any types of greetings or wish-you-were-here correspondence circa the early 1920s, mind you. These unsigned missives say things like, “You foxy-ass old whore,” or “You dirty old bitch, you belong in hell, probably,” and “You suck 10 cocks a week, minimum.” These are some of the tamer ones, mind you. This epidemic of epistolary obscenities first began to show up at the door of one Edith Swan (Olivia Colman), a...

“The Crown” could well bow out in style on home soil, with the final outing of the show leading the list of nominees for the 2024 BAFTA TV and TV Craft awards, announced Wednesday.

Further down in a tight group of frontrunners, BBC dramas “Happy Valley” and “The Sixth Commandment and Apple TV+’s “Slow Horses” each have six nominations. Sarah Lancashire’s leading actress nomination for “Happy Valley” could see...

David Seidler, the London-born playwright and screenwriter best known for “The King’s Speech,” has died while on a fly-fishing vacation in New Zealand, as per a report in The Guardian. His spokesperson said he was in the location he most revered, doing the activity he most loved when he passed: “It is exactly as he would have scripted it.” The winner of the Academy Award and BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay for the Colin Firth-led film was 86 years old.
Seidler’s career began in Australian television in the late 1960s. He came to the United States in the early 1980s, working for the soap opera “Another World,” then writing television movies like “Malice in Wonderland,” something of an early version of the series “Feud” as it concerned Hedda Hopper and Louella Parsons starring Jane Alexander and Elizabeth Taylor. "It's like a trap door to hell opens up everywhere you tread!" Sony Classics has debuted a funny final 60-second trailer for the British comedy Wicked Little Letters, opening in US theaters at the end of March. This "scandalously sweary" film from filmmaker Thea Sharrock (Me Before You and The One & Only Ivan) needs a proper trailer because it's a curse a minute in this comedy and they can't usually put this in a regular trailer. Let the F bombs fly!! Release the vulgarity!! When people in Littlehampton - including conservative local Edith - begin to receive letters full of hilariously harsh profanities, rowdy Irish migrant Rose is charged with the crime. Suspecting something is amiss, the town's women investigate. Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley star as Edith and Rose, respectively, with Timothy Spall, Gemma Jones, Lolly Adefope, and Anjana Vasan. Positive reviews state: "The central pairing of Buckley and...

‘Camomile Lawn’ Novelist’s Estate Snapped Up By Ilp
International Literary Properties has acquired the estate of British The Camomile Lawn novelist Mary Wesley. Channel 4’s adaptation of The Camomile Lawn is Channel 4’s second most successful drama series of all time, according to Ilp, and the deal will see Ilp manage the rights to Wesley’s work. Having famously published her first novel aged 70, she also wrote the likes of Jumping the Queue, Harnessing Peacocks and The Vacillations of Poppy Carew, all of which have previously been adapted for film and TV. “Mary was an incredible woman, an extraordinary author and a very close member of my family,” said Wesley’s daughter in law, the author Xinran Xue. Deadline revealed last year that Ilp, which holds rights to the literary estates of Langston Hughes and Evelyn Waugh, had headed on a West Coast charm offensive and snapped up the estate of Somerset Maugham.

A curious case of real-life poison pen letters is given an oddly cosy retelling in this well-polished if tonally uneven drama.
The town of Little Hampton on England’s south coast is the sort of place that launched a thousand middle-England mysteries, a sensation only enhanced by the 1920s setting. All of which makes it, at a glance, perfect a film that comes fitted with an all-star cast including Olivia Colman, Jessie Buckley and Timothy Spall. But if there’s no doubting the calibre of the cast, the quality of the writing is more debateable.
Colman and Buckley previously starred as different incarnations of the same character in The Lost Daughter but this time around they couldn't be playing characters that are more different. Colman is the pious Edith Swan, who lives a brow-beaten life under the watchful eye of her overbearing father Edward (Spall) while her neighbour, single mum...

Warning: contains spoilers for Wicked Little Letters.
Wicked Little Letters is remarkable for two things: being stuffed with the kind of language to make a sailor blush, and generosity to the real-life figures who inspired its story. If the film had told the complete tale of the poison pen campaign that scandalised 1920s Littlehampton, audiences may not feel as ready to empathise with Edith Swan or Rose Gooding.
As played by Olivia Colman and Jessie Buckley – two actors who never stop reminding you that no matter what despicable things their characters say or do, they’re flesh and blood people – Edith and Rose are easy to get behind. By the time Colman’s Edith is in the back of the police wagon taking her to serve a 12-month stretch for writing and sending a series of vulgar letters, the film invites us to judge everybody but her.
Film-Edith is the culprit but also a victim.

Of course we didn’t just ask the talent for their favourite swearwords for no reason, for Wicked Little Letters is a film that, in some ways, celebrates the English language, in all its disgraceful beauty. Below you can watch our interviews with the two lead stars in Colman and Buckley, while we also spoke to Timothy Spall and Anjana Vasan, as both duos talk about both the comedic, and profound elements of this production, as well as, of course, all of their favourite bad words.

Any wider comment on the strange, sad nature of the scandal this film is based on is sidestepped in favour of broad laughs and superficiality
Unconvincing, unfunny and bafflingly heavy-handed, this shrill non-comedy fails to say anything entertaining or historically insightful about the true story of the Littlehampton poison-pen scandal of 1923. It’s a terrible waste of a stellar cast, headed by Olivia Colman, although the simple aggregation of everyone’s acting talent does raise the film a bit.
Colman plays Edith Swan, a prim-and-proper spinster in the curtain-twitching world of 1920s Littlehampton, always congratulating herself on her Christian rectitude; she lives with grumpy elderly dad (Timothy Spall) and glowering mum (Gemma Jones). Edith has a problem neighbour with whom she’s fallen out after initial friendship: this is Rose Gooding (Jessie Buckley), a woman from Ireland who cheerfully likes drinking and swearing. So when Edith starts getting bizarre, obscene...

As Wicked Little Letters with Olivia Colman hits cinemas, the associate professor who unearthed the real-life case explains how petty grievances and prejudices got out of hand in 1920s Sussex
When the social historian Emily Cockayne first came across an old newspaper article about some “indescribably filthy” letters that were sent to residents of Littlehampton in the 1920s, she knew immediately that she wanted to write about it.
But she never dreamed that recounting the extraordinary real life events she had uncovered in a scholarly book about the history of neighbours would one day net her a film deal for a movie starring Olivia Colman, Timothy Spall and Jessie Buckley.

Details of Mike Leigh’s new film are beginning to emerge. The title, Hard Truths, and the leading cast have been confirmed.
Mike Leigh’s new film Hard Truths will be his first new release in five years. Mike Leigh’s films have been more sporadic in recent years, but it’s very much a case of quality over quantity, from Timothy Spall’s astonishing turn as Mr Turner in 2014 to 2018’s epic historical drama Peterloo.
Known for his improvisational method of creating characters, there is no script, in fact there us often no basic idea of what the plot will be when his actors are cast. Leigh begins by having private conversations with his actors about people they know in real life followed by an in-depth period of inprovisation. Actors are then introduced to each other and over an intensive couple of weeks, even months, the characters are developed.
