Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there’s nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. The financial data pulled together here for Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament is culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

Filmmaker Tim Burton is known for his gothic aesthetics and choosing to tell stories of weird characters. The filmmaker has put his stamp on blockbusters such as Batman as well as more personal stories such as Big Fish. He will be returning to one of his most beloved franchises with the Michael Keaton starrer Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
One movie in his filmography that stands out from the rest is his 2001 revival of Planet of the Apes. The project served as a remake of the 1968 classic sci-fi film, and starred Mark Wahlberg, Helena Bonham Carter, and more. The film was not received well upon release and is often considered to be a subpar remake of the original. Actor Paul Giamatti, who played Limbo, spoke about his experience while shooting the film.

The domestic box office at $2 billion currently this year is dragging 21% behind the same January-April spread last year, and when Universal’s Fall Guy commences the hot moviegoing season this Friday with a hopeful $35M, expect summer to drag some more.
That’s because the lack of product due to the actors’ strike has made a backloaded May through Labor Day frame in what will be lucky —lucky— to hit $3 billion. That’s a $1 billion less than last summer’s $4.09 billion per Comscore and -27% off. More bad news about summer: It’s not going to catch up the year any more against 2023.
Essentially, expect less and hope for more. Remember, no one saw Barbenheimer and Sound of Freedom coming last summer and that trio collectively minted $1.15 billion. If anything, summer 2024 is more about getting moviegoers back into the habit of moviegoing than breaking any records.

Tom Hanks is known for his good-guy characters in his films. Be it romantic comedies such as You’ve Got Mail and Sleepless in Seattle, or dramas such as Forrest Gump and Philadelphia, the actor always plays roles that represent the morally right side of humanity. With his penchant for such sweet roles, he has been nicknamed the Dad of Hollywood.
However, Hanks reportedly does not have the need to stick to such roles. He recently played Elvis Presley’s antagonistic manager Col. Tom Parker in Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis, which was different from his usual good-guy roles. He has also mentioned that he fought against decisions made by directors to portray him as a good guy, especially in a pivotal scene in his Oscar-winning film Forrest Gump.

Even amidst the glitz and glamour of the silver screen, the names people have come to adore aren’t always as genuine as they seem. Among the new productions on Broadway this spring is a revival of the classic musical “Cabaret,” starring Eddie Redmayne. In 2014 he starred as Stephen Hawking in director James Marsh‘s biopic “The Theory of Everything.” His performance won him an Oscar for Best Actor (making him the eighth youngest winner in that category at age 33), overcoming stiff competition from Michael Keaton, the star of the Best Picture winner of that year, “Birdman.” How did Redmayne pull through? Here are five reasons.
1. The industry felt he came into his own
Prior to “The Theory of Everything,” Redmayne was a rising star. In 2010 he won a Tony for his Broadway debut starring opposite Alfred Molina in John Logan‘s play “Red.” He went on to get more prominent film roles where critics, audiences and the industry started to take notice of him. Among them were Simon Curtis‘s 2011 Oscar-nominated biopic “My Week with Marilyn...

Back in 2023, Warner Bros. were gearing up for the release of one of the last movies to come out of the Dceu. The Flash, starring Ezra Miller in the lead, and directed by Andy Muschetti, had a lot hanging on its shoulders. The movie was supposed to be the vessel to reboot the Dceu to give way for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s Dcu.

Though fans weren’t sold on Ezra Miller’s involvement after their various scandals came to light, the reviews coming from the who’s who of Hollywood had them holding on to hope. From Tom Cruise to Stephen King, many celebrities came in defense of the movie, lauding it as one of the best superhero movies ever made. Unfortunately, the movie’s reception was not what anyone had hoped, and The Flash ended up being one ofe the worst features from Dceu.

In 1999, Tom Hanks starred in The Green Mile based on Stephen King’s novel of the same name. The narrative followed the journey of a death row prison guard during the Great Depression who witnesses supernatural events after the entry of a convict played by Michael Clarke Duncan.

The film also benefited from a disturbingly brilliant performance from Sam Rockwell who played the role of William ‘Wild Bill’ Wharton, one of the most difficult and uncontrollable prisoners in the facility. The Oscar winner’s unhinged portrayal of a challenging character was interestingly inspired from the iconic performance of Michael Keaton in Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice.

From Adam West in the ’60s to Robert Pattinson in 2022, a plethora of iterations of Batman have been presented onscreen since the character’s inception. But while most of them are great in their own right, nobody quite embodied the spirit of the caped crusader like the late Kevin Conroy, who is still considered by many to be the definitive version of Batman.
However, Conroy wasn’t the initial choice to voice the character, and even when he was considered for the part, the actor was interested in voicing other characters, which ended up frustrating Andrea Romano.

Kevin Conroy has worked with some of the most incredible voice actors because of his legendary work as Batman. The many villains he had to face, either minor or major, all impacted him in one way or another. The cast was a variety of enormous talent all mixed in one big familial project. Although all three of the MCU Spider-Man movies have “home” in the title, Spidey didn’t feel like he really came home until the very end of Spider-Man: No Way Home. That’s when Peter Parker walked into a squalid New York City apartment, knit together a home-made suit, and remembered his late parent-figure’s words about power and responsibility. So why the heck is Marvel unsure about what to do next?

Frank Darabont's 1999 Oscar darling "The Green Mile," based on an inexplicably serialized novel by Stephen King, is set in 1935 Louisiana in the fictional Cold Mountain Penitentiary, specifically the prison's death row. The correctional officers are overseen by Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) who struggles to retain his soul working such a dire job. The floor that leads to the prison's electric chair is painted green, earning it the titular nickname. Paul attempts to wrangle his officers' cruelty and retain what little hope he can, even after witnessing the state execute prisoner after prisoner. To make matters worse, he's suffering from a bladder infection.
The wildest prisoner on death row is William "Wild Bill" Wharton, played by the always amazing Sam Rockwell. Wharton was clearly mentally ill, and would frequently assault the officers, forcing him into a padded cell. He spat insults and racial epithets, flashing his yellowed teeth and horribly casual hate.

For an entire generation, Batman meant Michael Keaton. He brought the Dark Knight to life in not one, but two films that helped make Batman arguably the greatest superhero of all time. Decades later, he defied the law of aging by effortlessly slipping back into the cowl for “The Flash”.

Oh, and in between, he also jumped ships to the MCU as Vulture to make things difficult for our Friendly Neighbourhood Spider-Man. With all this exposure, one might expect Keaton to be a walking encyclopedia of comic book lore. In reality, however, he might just be the most delightfully clueless superhero actor out there.

Michael Keaton is not new to starring in comic book films. From Batman to Spider-Man: Homecoming, the actor has won over fans with his portrayal of iconic characters over the years. He is very versatile too, and hence can play both a hero and a villain very convincingly.
Keaton is one of the most sought-after stars too, and he has made several interesting cameos throughout his career. However, his appearance in Morbius left fans scratching their heads. Funnily enough, Keaton was as clueless about his role in the film as the fans.

American filmmaking was irrevocably changed by Francis Ford Coppola, one of the most important auteurs to emerge from the New Hollywood movement. His creative approach to filmmaking, which he pioneered with iconic films like The Godfather and Apocalypse Now, had a profound impact on movie buffs. Not every flick that he added to his coveted filmography, though, was given the same level of recognition.
Coppola’s 1992 adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, a classic work that had a profound influence on the horror genre, is a prime example of this. Although the set and costume designs in the film have received praise from critics as well as fans, there were many strange behind-the-scenes stories about the production, one of which was Coppola’s mistreatment of Winona Ryder.

Leonardo DiCaprio may keep his distance from the superhero genre today, but he was the studios’ favorite in playing some crucial Cbm characters. At the start of his career, he was offered the role of Robin in Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever. During the Dark Knight trilogy, Warner Bros. wanted Christopher Nolan to make The Riddler as the central villain in the third film. They wanted Nolan to bring DiCaprio on board the film for the same.

Director Barry Jenkins appeared at his first CinemaCon on Thursday to show off a trailer from Mufasa: The Lion King.
How did an arthouse director and Moonlight Oscar winner take on a four-quadrant movie? He wondered about that himself for a minute, he said, but he told the crowd that he’s seen the original 1994 movie 200 times with his nieces and nephews.
“When the script came to me, I was fascinated by watching these complex people dealing with complex emotions,” Jenkins told attendees at Caesars Palace Colosseum. “This film explores Mufasa’s rise to become the heroic king that we know.”

Fanboys will have to wait until San Diego Comic Con to see footage from Marvel Studios’ 2025 release Captain America: Brave New World, but exhibitors do not. On Thursday during Disney’s closing CinemaCon session, the studio showed off the new Anthony Mackie movie that picks up after the events of the 2021 Disney+ series The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. In that series, Sam Wilson takes over the shield left behind by the late Steve Rogers (Chris Evans).
Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige called the film “a grounded politically thriller” onstage of Caesars Palace at the Colosseum before introducing Mackie.
Mackie shared how he started in these movies 10 years ago, and loved how he’s now “starring in my own Marvel movie.” Mackie didn’t delay and introduced the footage.

The trailer for Paramount’s Smile 2 came as a surprise Thursday morning during the studio’s session at CinemaCon.

A sequel, Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, is in the works for release in fall 2025, Universal President of Domestic Theatrical Distribution Jim Orr said during the studio’s CinemaCon presentation Wednesday afternoon in Las Vegas.
The first film based on the wildly popular video game launched domestically day-and-date in cinemas and on Peacock on October 27. It went theatrical-only overseas and grossed over $291 million worldwide. The movie was also the most watched title ever in a weekend on Peacock, an anomaly given Freddy’s fans’ yearning to see the pic on the big screen. That doesn’t happen often with theatrical day-and-date streaming movies.

Illumination Boss Chris Meledandri introduced the clip today at the Caesars Colosseum, thanking exhibitors for the sleeper success of his animation studio’s Migration ($293 million in box office).
“In case of any doubt, our commitment to produce original animation film remains steadfast,” said Meledandri.
