Science fiction houses some of the most creative and unique concepts and designs in film, especially when it comes to the idea of war and conquest. Whether it's alien invasion movies or space exploration that takes heroes to new worlds, many films and franchises showcase mighty, advanced militaries, both alien and futurist humans. These can make for some fun and exciting sci-fi war stories and often bring out the best in special effects and CGI.
Considering how many sci-fi franchises make use of themes like dictatorship, rebellion, and exploration, advanced militaries are key to survival in these universes. While some are elite units of grand, heroic armies, others are shown to be the foot soldiers of tyrants and invaders. All the same, these are a popular staple of science fiction, with the likes of Dennis Villeneuve's Dune recently showing some of the best of these fictitious fighting forces.

Alien: Romulus is linked to the Alien franchise, and has connections to the franchise from Alien to Alien: Covenant. Director Fede Álvarez crafted the film to provide both new viewers and hardcore fans with a unique experience. The inspiration for Alien: Romulus came from a moment in Aliens.
Following the release of the first trailer for this year’s Alien outing, Alien: Romulus, director Fede Álvarez has revealed how connected to the rest of the franchise the latest installment will be. And it’s perhaps a lot more connected than we originally thought. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Álvarez revealed that, despite previous reports claiming Romulus would be largely “unconnected” to the likes of Alien: Covenant, this is far from the case.
“That’s not correct, but it does take place between the two movies. The way we crafted it is if you haven’t seen any of them,...

For years, rights issues have held up updated video releases of James Cameron’s Aliens, The Abyss, and True Lies, with the latter two features skipping Blu-ray entirely. At last, all three have come to 4K Uhd, and their joint release allows one to better appreciate the unexpected connections that link these otherwise completely distinct features.
On a basic level, all three films, covering less than a decade from 1986 to 1994, chart one of the most meteoric career rises in Hollywood history—one that you can see in their exponentially increasing budgets and scale. Aliens, made in the wake of Cameron’s breakout success of 1984’s The Terminator, was produced for a paltry $18 million, not much more than the $11 million allocated to Ridley Scott’s Alien nearly a decade earlier. But Cameron, who cut his teeth in Roger Corman’s micro-budget talent incubator, knew how to stretch a dollar to its maximum use.

The upcoming Avatar movies will introduce new characters, expanding the franchise beyond Pandora. James Cameron has a pool of talented actors, including Linda Hamilton and Jamie Lee Curtis, for possible roles. Actors like Michael Biehn and Robert Patrick could play intriguing roles in the Avatar universe, adding depth to the story.
There are still three Avatar movies left from director James Cameron, and here are 10 actors that frequently collaborate with the actor that could appear in the upcoming movies. The Avatar franchise is already massive, with all kinds of characters, locations, and storylines existing within the world of Pandora, and that's after only two movies. The next three Avatar movies will undoubtedly expand the universe of the franchise even further, and with that means the introduction of more characters. Luckily, Avatar's James Cameron already has a massive pool of actors to pull from, and here is who they could play.

They say “In space no one can hear you scream.” Buuuuuuuut we’ve seen through eight Alien films that if you’re in a spaceship plenty of people can hear you scream. The Xenomorphs have no problem causing their victims a lot of pain. Even though we’ve seen them in a lot of films, fans will mostly agree that after Aliens, the franchise was never the same. But did you know that District 9 director Neill Blomkamp almost made an Aliens sequel?
In 2015, filmmaker Blomkamp announced he had been working on a new Alien project. This was even a surprise to Fox, which owned the series. Fans seemed excited by the prospect of the director taking on the project after the imaginative sci-fi films he had been releasing. Ultimately, after some starts and stops, the film would fall apart. Let’s find out exactly why here on What Happened To This Unmade Movie?...

"The Terminator" is a perfect movie. /Film's own Jacob Hall has argued director James Cameron has never surpassed it. Cameron knows how to get his money's worth from Titanic-sized budgets and the filmmaking world is a better place when he gets to reach the peak of his ambitions. Still, "The Terminator" — a lean sci-fi slasher that's both exciting and foreboding — shows that Cameron could still spin gold with more modest tools.
Even if "The Terminator" isn't much of an actor's picture, it's well-cast, particularly Michael Biehn as haggard time traveler Kyle Reese and, of course, Arnold Schwarzenegger as the titular cyborg assassin. This film was a key step in Schwarzenegger's climb to being the biggest movie star in the world. Even so, it's something of a Hollywood legend how these two weren't the initial picks for these roles.
In particular, it's spread through the grapevine that O.J. Simpson was considered to star as the Terminator.

Terminator is an important film when it comes to science fiction in Hollywood. Sarah Connor, through the Terminator franchise, has become one of the most recognizable female science fiction protagonists, only superseded by Ripley from Aliens. A recent theory has come to light, pointing out that Sarah Connor might have lied to her son about who his father was, which was originally ‘revealed’ to be his best friend from the future, Kyle Reese.
Michael Biehn as Kyle Reese in The Terminator
Kyle Reese goes back in time to protect Sarah Connor, whose future son leads the rebellion against the machines and is almost successful in overthrowing Skynet and its mechanical monsters. Sarah tells John that his father is Kyle Reese, but the theory states this must be a lie told by Sarah to motivate John to become the hero of humanity that he is supposed to be.

David Lynch's "Dune" was mostly seen as a misstep for the celebrated director back in 1984. As we gear up for the bleak blockbuster that is Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part Two," Lynch's "Dune" now occupies an unusual space in the public consciousness — somewhere between cult classic and historic blunder. There are undoubtedly plenty of things wrong with "Dune" 1984, and the film suffered a brutal critical and commercial reception. But forty years after Lynch's $40 million spectacle bombed at the box office, some have come to see the films' positives, arguing that "Dune" 1984 is better than its reputation suggests.
Which, as it happens, is a perfectly reasonable point of view. Aside from the impressive set and costume design, "Dune" actually featured some pretty good visual effects for the time. What's more, the casting was excellent. Lynch may have ruthlessly denied Glenn Close for a part in "Dune," but luckily for him,...

The Gunfight at the O.K. Corral lasted under one minute and took place over 140 years ago. Tombstone, which dramatizes said gunfight, was made just over 30 years ago and already has more mystery to it. We may know who killed who that October day in Arizona, but there’s still some discrepancies over who truly directed 1993’s Tombstone. One thing’s for sure: Michael Biehn knows it wasn’t Kurt Russell…despite what Kurt Russell may say.
Speaking on Michael Rosenbaum on Inside of You, Biehn – who played outlaw Johnny Ringo – tried to once again shut down the rumors that Russell was the true director of Tombstone. “I get so f’in’ tired of people asking me if Kurt Russell directed the movie…Kurt Russell did not direct the movie. Kurt Russell was responsible for getting the movie off the ground. I never would have played Johnny Ringo if it wasn’t for Kurt Russell.

Since the dawn of Hollywood, the Western genre has been a vibrant and versatile source of entertainment for audiences around the world. Known for their great use of scenery, character development, and old-fashioned gun battles, these movies also house some of the best villains of cinema. Ranging from ruthless outlaws to scheming, greedy industrialists, the Old West has no shortage of great foes.
Western villains often stand out for their corruption and brutality, something required to fit the harsh conditions of the American Frontier. Making names for themselves looting gold, murdering innocent people, and terrorizing towns, these bad guys often earn a reputation as the worst characters around. The genre is a great setting for true justice — and it typically comes swiftly to these loathsome outlaws.

Tombstone is a popular Western movie known for its iconic quotes and one-liners. The character Doc Holliday, played by Val Kilmer, delivers some of the most memorable lines in the film. The quotes add to the enjoyment and excitement of the movie as they are delivered by a talented cast, including Kurt Russell and Powers Boothe.
The Tombstone quotes from the 1990s Western movie have allowed it to stand the test of time as one of the most popular in the genre. While it is not a proper Western, like those by John Ford, Clint Eastwood, and John Wayne, the movie is a fun thrill ride that re-tells the story of Wyatt Earp and the legendary gunfight at the O.K. Corral. With a lighter tone and a lot of breezy and memorable dialogue, the Western movie has become a favorite among fans of the genre and mainstream movie fans in general.

Hyped as an interactive sequel to James Cameron’s 1986 classic, Aliens: Colonial Marines was a disappointment in 2013. We look back at how its plot could have changed the Alien franchise…
In 2011, it all looked so promising. As narrated by Gearbox Software studio boss Randy Pitchford, a demo of Aliens: Colonial Marines, unveiled at that year’s E3, hinted at the kind of game fans of the Alien franchise had been eagerly awaiting for years. It was a first-person shooter made by a respected studio – Gearbox had just had a hit with Borderlands – and was billed as a direct sequel to James Cameron’s 1986 film, Aliens. It even had a couple of familiar actors returning to provide their voices.
The demo gave a tantalising glimpse of what looked like a thoroughly engrossing narrative blaster. It took the player back to Lv-426, the setting of Alien and Aliens, and as one of several Colonial Marines,...

“Come with me if you want to live!” But don’t bother if you don’t care for James Cameron’s movies. Michael Biehn — who played Kyle Reese in 1984’s The Terminator — revealed that singer Sting turned down playing the character because he didn’t like the director’s previous work…Piranha II: The Spawning.
Biehn — who was also featured in deleted scenes in Terminator 2: Judgment Day — remembered Sting’s fateful words to Cameron during the casting process, telling Michael Rosenbaum on his podcast, “I think originally [James Cameron] wanted Sting because he thought Sting had this unearthly quality about him. And I think he met with Sting, and I think Sting basically said, ‘Yeah, I just saw Piranha 2. I think I’ll take a pass on this thing.’ Something along those lines. I’m not sure how serious Jim was about him. I’ve never heard any other name associated with Kyle Reese.

Warfare has been a staple of cinema across every genre, ranging from comedic satires to dark and gritty war dramas that explore all sides of combat. Science fiction has been a particularly strong genre, with many franchises musing about the potential for warfare in the future, and how evolving technologies will shape future conflict. Naturally, the genre has produced many great movies dedicated to these fantastical futures (and pasts) and the nature of their armies.
Science fiction movies and shows have pushed the limits of imagination when it comes to militarism, and many truly iconic species and forces have been created as a result. Ranging from interplanetary invasion forces to small squads who proved the might of their army, soldiers make for some of the most compelling characters in the genre. Considering the number of sci-fi movies with deadly and formidable adversaries, a strong army is usually needed to maintain an advantage in the world.

Arnold Schwarzenegger almost missed out on playing The Terminator in James Cameron's iconic 1984 movie. Oj Simpson was originally set to be cast as The Terminator, but his enthusiasm was too much for the role. Schwarzenegger's mechanical delivery of the T-800 added to the success of the Terminator franchise.

Val Kilmer's portrayal of Doc Holliday in Tombstone is considered one of his best performances. Kilmer learned to play the piano specifically for the scene in which Doc plays Chopin's Nocturne in E minor. Kilmer's dedication to his role extended beyond piano playing, as he also learned Latin for a tense scene with Johnny Ringo.
Val Kilmer's Doc Holliday never ceases to amaze those around him in Tombstone, and the same can be said for the actor's performance playing the piano during the 1993 Western. The actor has given dozens of notable performances throughout his 40-year career, but his portrayal as Doc Holliday might be one of his absolute best. Kilmer fully embodied the gambling gunslinger in the 1879-set film that also featured standout performances from co-stars Kurt Russell, Bill Paxton, Sam Elliot, Powers Boothe, and Michael Biehn. Stamped with “August 26th, 1993”, the footage shows trailers marked “Doc” and “Wyatt”, for lawman Earp as played by Kurt Russell. The footage then shows Russell outside of his trailer, with cameraman Kilmer assuring him, “You’ve arrived! Director William Friedkin (who passed away earlier this year) made a lot of great films, including Best Picture winner The French Connection and one of the best horror movies ever made, The Exorcist. One you don’t hear referenced very often is the serial killer thriller Rampage, which had trouble making its way out into the world and was a project where Friedkin felt he had missed the mark, as the finished film wasn’t close enough to his original vision for it. But now Kino Lorber is showing Rampage some of the respect it’s been lacking over the decades, as Blu-ray.com reports they’ll be giving the film a 4K Uhd release sometime in early 2024.
Scripted by Friedkin and based on a novel of the same name by William P. Wood, Rampage delves into the subject of legal insanity, so often the default defense in modern-time gruesome crime trials.

December has been packed with 4K releases of James Cameron films. First up was the release of the Titanic 25th Anniversary Collector’s Edition 4K Uhd on December 5th. 4K digital releases of The Abyss, Aliens, True Lies, Avatar, and Avatar: The Way of Water followed on December 12th, and the Avatar movies also got new physical media releases on the 19th. March 12, 2024 is the date when Disney is going to give The Abyss, Aliens, and True Lies their physical 4K Uhd releases… but The Digital Bits reports that the 4K digital release of The Abyss has been cancelled in the UK because of “the rat scene“.
Here’s what The Digital Bits had to say: “We’ve learned from industry sources that the 4K Ultra HD release of James Cameron’s The Abyss (1989) in the UK has been cancelled, and for exactly the reason you think—the scene in...

Val Kilmer's portrayal of Doc Holliday in the western biopic Tombstone was praised by critics and became one of the most iconic roles of his career. The producers initially wanted to cast Willem Dafoe as Doc Holliday, but the studio vetoed it due to the controversy surrounding his role in Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ. Kilmer's performance in Tombstone was considered a snub by the Oscars, and the role of Doc became so important to his career that he named his autobiography after one of Doc's iconic quotes.
It’s impossible to imagine anybody else besides Val Kilmer playing the role of Doc Holliday in the western biopic Tombstone, but he wasn’t the first actor the producers wanted for the part. Tombstone depicts real-life historical events from the frontier, like the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. It was one of the most commercially...

The Abyss, a 1989 sci-fi thriller directed by James Cameron, is finally getting a 4K Ultra-hd release after nearly 35 years since its initial release. The movie was a critical hit, winning an Oscar for Best Visual Effects, and it served as Cameron's first true exploration of computer visual effects. The Abyss laid the groundwork for Cameron's future blockbuster franchise, Avatar, with themes and concepts explored in both movies, particularly the use of water-based production.
Nearly 35 years after the movie first hit theaters, The Abyss is finally getting a 4K Ultra-hd release. James Cameron's 1989 sci-fi thriller centered on an oil platform crew being hired by the U.S. government to help a Seal team find a missing submarine before the Soviet Union acquire it, only to discover alien life near the titular area. Led by Ed Harris, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Cameron vet Michael Biehn, the movie was a modest box office success,...

Top Gun's success was not easily replicated, as evidenced by the long delay in completing the sequel, and the many poorly received rip-offs that followed. The success of Top Gun was due to its thrilling adventure and fun factor, which critics complaining about cheesiness and lack of believability missed. Navy Seals, the Navy-approved knock-off of Top Gun, failed to replicate its charm, escapism, and fast-paced action, resulting in terrible reviews and being deemed the "poor man's Top Gun."
While Top Gun inadvertently improved the Navy’s recruitment rates, the institution’s attempt to cash in on this trend with a Charlie Sheen vehicle failed disastrously. Upon its release in 1986, Top Gun was a much bigger hit than anticipated. The movie launched its star, Tom Cruise, into the A-list, made Tony Scott a majorly in-demand action director, and resulted in Navy recruitment rates significantly increasing for a few years after its release.

What makes great directors great is their massive swings at creating something that is remembered in the eyes of film lovers for decades to come. Anyone who has ever tried to even make a film, whether it be for a big studio or with a few friends on the weekend in their backyards, knows one thing. A director has to have big ideas and vision to achieve something special about the film they are creating.

Western heroes are typically depicted as clean-shaven, while villains sport long facial hair for an intimidating effect. Mustaches play a significant role in completing a character's appearance and helping them stand out among their counterparts. Some Western movies have seen subversions of these facial hair tropes.
Westerns are known for their tense shootouts and heavy themes, but they also often include some incredible mustaches. Whether on the side of the law, a dastardly villain, or somewhere in between, many of the men featured in Westerns are remembered for their mustaches just as much as they are for their actions. Typically, Western heroes are depicted as being clean-shaven and pristine, as it often reflects their character, and the antagonists are often shown sporting long facial hair for similar effects. However, the genre has seen subversions of this trope through the years, thus making for some interesting characters and mustache designs.

The Abyss hi-def edition is finally coming after a decade, featuring groundbreaking SFX and impressive underwater chase scenes. Color grading restoration will enhance the original subtleties and bring out the beauty of the film's visuals. An extended version of The Abyss with unreleased footage may be a possibility, adding more depth to the story.
Having been in the pipeline for the best part of a decade, it appears that the much-anticipated hi-def edition of James Cameron's 1989 underwater spectacular The Abyss is finally about to see the light of day. Something of a rite of passage for sci-fi fans in the 1980s, the rollercoaster action film featured Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio and Ed Harris as estranged lovers Lindsey and Bud in the lead roles.
Former Cameron collaborator Michael Biehn plays Coffey, the leader of a group of Navy SEALs tasked with the job of investigating the mysterious disappearance of a submarine in the mid-Atlantic.

Director Fede Alvarez should now be in production on the new movie in the Alien franchise, a project which may or may not be called Alien Romulus. Originally designed to debut on Hulu, Disney recently announced an August 16, 2024 theatrical release date for the movie, which bodes well for its quality. So as a filmmaker who’s known for moments of brutal, cringe-inducing violence works to bring the Xenomorphs back to our screens, we decided it was time to put together an article that keeps track of Everything We Know About Fede Alvarez’s New Alien Movie.

While it's known as a sci-fi action classic, any fan of "The Terminator" knows it's basically a slasher movie with a terrifying killer robot at its center. James Cameron's 1984 breakout has been made even more terrifying by the recent advances in AI and Cameron's belief that the events in "The Terminator" could happen in real life — though that's still not quite as horrifying as whatever AI-written garbage Joe Russo helps usher into existence in the near future.
Anyway, the point is that "The Terminator," aside from being a touchstone of the sci-fi action genre, is also pretty darn scary. Arnold Schwarzenegger's cyborg killer is best described by Michael Biehn's Kyle Reese in the film when he says, "It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop ... ever, until you are dead,...

Western movies often feature real-life characters, especially when it comes to the roles of villains, from the Wild West era. Still, Western films usually take significant creative liberties with historical accuracy to create more dramatic narratives. Some of the best actors of their generation have portrayed real-life people in Westerns.
Western cinema often includes characters who exist in real life, particularly for the role of villains and antagonists. Usually, to explore the darker chapters of the past, many Westerns have woven narratives around real-life figures who left a mark on the era of the Wild West. From infamous outlaws to politicians, these historical personas have been immortalized on the silver screen, portrayed by some of the most distinguished actors of their time in some of the best Western movies ever made.

Grindhouse is one of the most influential box office failures of the 21st century. Despite grossing a paltry $25.4 million at the box office on a budget of around $60 million, Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s 2007 love letter to exploitation cinema has managed to spawn four spin-off movies — Machete, Machete Kills, Hobo with a Shotgun, and now Thanksgiving— in addition to reintroducing a vintage aesthetic that has been mimicked by countless other throwback movies.
Rodriguez’s Planet Terror and Tarantino’s Death Proof each have their merits — the former plays like a satirical pastiche of nonstop action, while the latter is more indicative of genuine exploitation fare — but Grindhouse is more than just a double feature. It’s an experience, complete with faux aging to recreate the look of beat-up film prints along with vintage interstitials and retro-inspired trailers for nonexistent movies.

Fans of James Cameron’s underwater sci-fi adventure The Abyss (1989) have been waiting for a long time to see the film in high definition, let alone 4K. The last home video release of the film was on DVD in 2000, and since then, the film has been stuck in a limbo of rights issues and technical challenges. But now, the wait is finally over, as Cameron himself announced on Twitter that The Abyss: Special Edition, the director’s preferred cut of the film, will be remastered in 4K and presented in theaters on December 6, 20211

Most of the moviegoing population is probably under the assumption that "Titanic" was director James Cameron's first seafaring movie, but they'd be wrong! That honor goes to "The Abyss," the 1989 sci-fi flick that went on to garner four Academy Award nominations and win the Oscar for Best Visual Effects.. The only drawback of "The Abyss," however, is that its availability has long been a matter of concern among film enthusiasts. Years ago, /Film covered the rumors that the movie would finally come to Blu-ray and 4K after only being available on DVD. Last we heard, this was still the plan ... but now we're hearing from the man, myth, and legend himself that fans will finally get the chance to watch the movie exactly the way Cameron intended it -- on the big screen and through the fabled Special Edition.
Cameron announced the news himself on Twitter to immediate celebrations on social media.

Your wish has now come true as The Abyss: Special Edition, a 4K remaster, will be returning to theaters for one night only on December 6 followed by a likely home video release.
