- DirectorGeorge LucasStarsMark HamillHarrison FordCarrie FisherLuke Skywalker joins forces with a Jedi Knight, a cocky pilot, a Wookiee and two droids to save the galaxy from the Empire's world-destroying battle station, while also attempting to rescue Princess Leia from the mysterious Darth Vader.A New Hope is one of the most iconic films of all time, and introduced us to this galaxy far far away in the best possible way. Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford, and Carrie Fisher all mix together perfectly and our trio of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, and Princess Leia is born. We also get such a fun supporting crew of characters here with, Obi Wan, Chewbacca, and the droids. The villains also are so well portrayed here, with Peter Cushing giving Grand Moff Tarkin the perfect amount of arrogance, and Darth Vader being this terrifying mysterious killer. The world building in this movie is pretty much unmatched, the menacing Empire, the scummy sands of Tatooine, and the lore of the force really make you feel like you're in this world. The story is so engaging and fun, while being so simple to understand, and anyone can enjoy this movie. The shots are beautiful, with my personal favorite being the famous Twin Suns scene. And John Williams' score is a masterpiece and elevates this movie to another level, with the classic Star Wars theme, the Cantina song, Leia's theme, and the force theme all coming from this original movie. 10/10 movie and a wonderful beginning to the franchise.
- DirectorIrvin KershnerStarsMark HamillHarrison FordCarrie FisherAfter the Rebel Alliance are overpowered by the Empire, Luke Skywalker begins his Jedi training with Yoda, while his friends are pursued across the galaxy by Darth Vader and bounty hunter Boba Fett.Empire Strikes Back is one of the few sequels that manages to be even better than the original. Luke, Han, and Leia all get pushed to their limits in a movie that is darker and more mature than it's predecessor, which helps their characters grow and keeps you engaged in the story. Luke's training with Yoda is fantastic and Yoda gives some of the best quotes in film history. Han and Leia's romance is beautifully written and the chemistry between Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher is top tier. Darth Vader becomes a much more active part of the story this time around, and we get to dive deeper into his character, and of course we get the most famous scene in film history where we find out that he is Luke's father. Billy Dee Williams also makes his Star Wars debut as Lando Calrissian here, and you can just tell he loves playing this character, which makes him such a joy to watch on screen. And once again the score is absolutely fantastic, with The Imperial March being the standout. The higher stakes, improved lightsaber duel, and bittersweet ending make this a movie that somehow manages to top it's first perfect entry, another 10/10 film.
- DirectorRichard MarquandStarsMark HamillHarrison FordCarrie FisherAfter rescuing Han Solo from Jabba the Hutt, the Rebel Alliance attempt to destroy the second Death Star, while Luke struggles to help Darth Vader back from the dark side.Return of the Jedi is a perfect conclusion to the original Star Wars trilogy. Everything in the Throne Room is absolute peak storytelling, the way that it's written, shot, acted, and directed is fantastic. The redemption of Darth Vader/ Anakin and the completion of Luke's arc to becoming a Jedi is so satisfying, and Mark Hamill gives his best performance as Luke. Ian McDiarmid really gets to shine as Emperor Palpatine in this movie, and gives us a character so evil, that we get to see the humanity within Darth Vader come through. Carrie Fisher also gives her best performance as Princess Leia in this movie, in the much underrated Endor Bridge scene. This movie has so much heart and emotion throughout it and it adds to what is the best action in the trilogy to really make it a thrilling conclusion on every level. Just like the first two, the movie is great to look at, and the score is out of this world. This time the hilight from the soundtrack has to be Luke and Leia's theme. Return of the Jedi really is an expert character exploration of our main hero and our main villain and I always have a few tears watching this one. This rounds out the trilogy with another 10/10 movie in my opinion.
- DirectorGeorge LucasStarsEwan McGregorLiam NeesonNatalie PortmanTwo Jedi escape a hostile blockade to find allies and come across a young boy who may bring balance to the Force, but the long dormant Sith resurface to claim their original glory. The Phantom Menace really is not a good movie. It's boring, not engaging, full of bad acting, painfully unfunny, and includes the character of Jar Jar Binks. However there definitely are some good things to come out of this film. Liam Neeson was awesome as Qui-Gon Jinn, and casting Ewan McGregor as a younger Obi-Wan was one of the best decisions George Lucas ever made. Darth Maul was really cool, but was also way underutilized. The final lightsaber duel between Obi-Wan, Qui-Gon and Darth Maul was incredible and John Williams once again killed it with the score, bringing us the masterpiece that is, Duel of the Fates. The overall story of this film is pretty solid and important to the franchise, but in execution some things, especially the dialogue needed to be vastly improved. Overall this is a very mediocre movie with some great elements, which makes it a frustrating watch.
- DirectorGeorge LucasStarsHayden ChristensenNatalie PortmanEwan McGregorTen years after initially meeting, Anakin Skywalker shares a forbidden romance with Padmé Amidala, while Obi-Wan Kenobi discovers a secret clone army crafted for the Jedi.In my opinion this film is quite a step up from The Phantom Menace but it's still not great. The movie is pretty fast paced and unlike Phantom Menace I am never bored during the film. All the action set pieces are actually pretty great, and the movie is usually stunning to look at, with many beautiful shots. Ewan McGregor carries this film as Obi-Wan and his detective storyline is actually pretty entertaining. The thing that holds this down is the romance between Anakin and Padme. The writing for those two feels clunky and unnatural, and Hayden Christensen and Natalie Portman have no real chemistry with each other. Despite the romance storyline not being well executed, John Williams writes one of his best themes of all time with their love theme, Across the Stars. The best scene with Anakin in this movie is the scene where his mother passes away and he massacres the sand people. Hayden Christensen brought some fantastic facial acting in that scene. Attack of the Clones is a fun and enjoyably movie, that gets drug down heavily by it's lackluster love story and bad dialogue.
- DirectorGeorge LucasStarsHayden ChristensenNatalie PortmanEwan McGregorThree years into the Clone Wars, Obi-Wan Kenobi pursues a new threat, while Anakin Skywalker is lured by Chancellor Palpatine into a sinister plot to rule the galaxy.Revenge of the Sith is an incredible movie and one of the best Star Wars stories ever told. It is a vast improvement over the other prequel movies in pretty much every way. Telling Anakin's fall to the dark side, by slowly building up his relationship with Palpatine was genius. George Lucas was also so smart to focus on Palpatine so much in this movie, because Ian McDiarmid is absoloute perfect casting. We get to see him manipulate his way to power and it's so fun to watch a villain that is so competent. Ewan McGregor once again brings it as Obi-Wan and his final "You were the chosen one" speech pretty much always brings a tear to my eye. Hayden Christensen also does a better job here as Anakin than he did in the previous movie, though he's still probably the weakest link of the main cast. This movie has a great dark ending, where the heroes lose, and Order 66 is a wonderful way to show the tragic eradication of the Jedi Order. The final duels between Anakin and Obi Wan and Yoda and Palpatine represent the light and dark sides so well, and it's awesome watching these all powerful characters fight like they never have before. The score by John Williams here is of course fantastic, and I would say Anakin's Dark Deeds and Battle of the Heroes are the best tracks this time around. Revenge of the Sith is one of the most important Star Wars movies and it really does the story justice.
- CreatorGeorge LucasStarsTom KaneDee Bradley BakerMatt LanterJedi Knights lead the Grand Army of the Republic against the droid army of the Separatists. The Clone Wars is probably the best piece of Star Wars content that there is. This show shows the slow downfall of the Jedi Order as they choose to play politics over doing what is right time and time again. This gives us such a good chance to relate to and sympathize with Anakin as we see him get continuously screwed over by the Jedi. It also develops his fall to the dark side so well as we see his attachment issues grow more throughout the series, especially with his padawan, Ahsoka. Anakin and Ahsoka's dynamic is so well written and Ahsoka's arc is one of the best in Star Wars history. She starts off as this bratty kid and throughout the show she gets trained by Anakin. She later disassociates with the Jedi Order, but is a perfect representation of what a Jedi is actually supposed to be. We get to see the perspective of the Clones, mainly Captain Rex and we see the torture and hardships that they went through, where as in the movies they were just mindless background characters. And it makes Order 66 even more tragic. Involving the Mandalorians in the show was genius. Seeing Duchess Satine try to keep Mandalore a neutral planet is such an interesting story and learning more about Mandalorian culture and history is excellent world building. We also get her love story with Obi-Wan Kenobi, which parallels Anakin and Padme's love story, but Obi-Wan was actually able to put his emotions aside in the end and stay loyal to the Jedi Code. And the cherry on top of this show is Darth Maul as the villain. They took this cool but quiet character from the movies and made him one of the most complex characters in the entire franchise. Characters like Bo Katan, Asajj Ventress, and Cad Bane are also all incredible additions to Star Wars. The way this show manages to tie all of these stories and characters into such a beautiful finale is incredible and I would say that the last four episodes of this show is the best television I've ever witnessed.
- CreatorSimon KinbergCarrie BeckDave FiloniStarsDave FiloniTaylor GrayFreddie Prinze Jr.The crew of the spaceship Ghost defends those who cannot fight for themselves against the Empire, providing the spark for a rebellion.Rebels is a very hit or miss show for me. Whenever it focuses on characters from Clone Wars, like Ahsoka, Rex, Bo Katan, and Darth Maul I thoroughly enjoy it. I just don't find the main characters or story that interesting. Kanan and Hera are both pretty cool, but they always get overshadowed by Ezra and Sabine who I find to be annoying most of the time. The animation and maturity are also both a step down from Clone Wars which is kind of frustrating. This is a show that has some great moments, but overall it never really sat with me the way that I wish it did.
- DirectorJ.J. AbramsStarsDaisy RidleyJohn BoyegaOscar IsaacAs a new threat to the galaxy rises, Rey, a desert scavenger, and Finn, an ex-stormtrooper, must join Han Solo and Chewbacca to search for the one hope of restoring peace. The Force Awakens was a solid movie to bring Star Wars back to the big screen. This movie does a great job setting up intrigue for our new characters and the new leads do a very good job here. Daisy Ridley did a good job with Rey here and her score by John Williams is great. John Boyega as Finn and Adam Driver as Kylo Ren also do a good job. The script is very similar to A New Hope but it's still enjoyable. There are some great action set pieces and Harrison Ford was phenomenal in his long awaited return as Han Solo. However, despite Han Solo being a major character in this movie, and both Luke and Leia having minor roles, this movie never reunites our three original leads, which is just insanely stupid. I think The Force Awakens is a good solo movie but it doesn't get that love now because of how weak the overall trilogy ended up being.
- DirectorGareth EdwardsStarsFelicity JonesDiego LunaAlan TudykIn a time of conflict, a group of unlikely heroes band together on a mission to steal the plans to the Death Star, the Empire's ultimate weapon of destruction.Rogue One is easily the best of the Disney Star Wars movies. It really puts the War in Star Wars, it's darker, and grittier than anything that came before it. It gives us a more realistic take on the rebellion and shows us the true sacrifices that must be made to fight against an evil like the Empire. Felicity Jones as Jyn Erso and Diego Luna as Cassian Andor are perfectly casted and bring this movie to life with complex characters that feel so real. K-2SO is also the funniest droid in the entire franchise. The final battle on Scarif is the best action in all of Star Wars and gets you on the edge of your seat. We get to see Darth Vader be the most brutal he's ever been in this movie and it's awesome. This is a Star Wars movie with so much emotion, so many layers, and so much incredible action that it makes it one of the best movies in the franchise.
- DirectorRian JohnsonStarsDaisy RidleyJohn BoyegaMark HamillRey develops her abilities with the help of Luke Skywalker, as the Resistance prepares for battle against the First Order.Rian Johnson is a very talented director and he did a great job directing this movie, but he didn't understand the Star Wars universe enough to write a script that made sense in it. I get what he was going for with Luke Skywalker's story arc and I think the theme of redemption throughout this movie is beautiful, especially that scene with the ghost of Yoda. Mark Hamill gave what might be his best performance as Luke here, however I just don't believe that Luke Skywalker would ever try to murder his nephew in his sleep. The main line of reasoning we get for the events of this movie just fundamentally doesn't make any sense within the story of Star Wars. Daisy Ridley and Adam Driver once again do a great job as Rey and Kylo Ren, and their storyline of slowly connecting with each other is easily my favorite part of the film. This movie does make a lot of mistakes though, including sidelining Finn throughout the runtime and then robbing him of a powerful sacrifice at the end. The whole resistance subplot in this movie is boring and one of the most frustrating things that I've ever watched. Admiral Holdo had no reason not to tell Poe her plan and so many people die because of her terrible leadership, but the movie treats her like she was some sort of hero. Killing off Supreme Leader Snoke like a punk, wasted what could've been such an interesting character. While there was definitely an attempt to make a complex story here the character assasination and then actual anti-climactic death of Luke Skywalker, and the many other story problems leave this movie as one of the most hated in the franchise.
- DirectorRon HowardStarsAlden EhrenreichWoody HarrelsonEmilia ClarkeDuring an adventure in the criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his future co-pilot Chewbacca and Lando Calrissian years before joining the Rebel Alliance.Solo is fine. Alden Ehrenreich did a pretty good job playing a younger Han Solo, and I liked seeing him interact with Chewbacca a lot. I feel like this movie wasted lots of major talent though. Woody Harrelson, Emilia Clarke, and Donald Glover are all pretty underutilized and bland despite being great actors. The coolest part of this movie was the Darth Maul and Qi'ra scene at the end that teased an awesome sequel, which we are now never going to get. Solo is a fun little adventure with some cool action but don't expect anything great.
- CreatorJon FavreauStarsPedro PascalChris BartlettKatee SackhoffThe travels of a lone bounty hunter in the outer reaches of the galaxy, far from the authority of the New Republic. The Mandalorian is fantastic. It starts as a fairly simple story about a hardened lonely bounty hunter who learns to care about something when he finds Grogu. How Pedro Pascal manages to give such a great performance as Mando from behind a mask is honestly insane. This show also pulls in from all elements of Star Wars and really makes this universe feel more connected than ever. The action in the show is great and I love learning so much about Mandalorian culture. Bringing Katee Sackhoff as Bo-Katan from The Clone Wars into this show was a genius idea. The character adapts perfectly into live action and I love how her ideals and morals as a Mandalorian challenge our main character's. It creates such an interesting dynamic between the two characters and the actors have amazing chemistry with each other. This show has such a solid emotional center and so many fun recurring characters that it just always manages to be an enjoyable watch.
- DirectorJ.J. AbramsStarsDaisy RidleyJohn BoyegaOscar IsaacThe surviving Resistance faces the First Order once again in the conclusion of the Skywalker saga. The Rise of Skywalker is the most corporate manufactured blockbuster of all time. Nothing in this movie feels like it has a filmmaker's vision and it just shows how JJ Abrams really didn't have answers to all those questions he set up in Force Awakens. Bringing Palpatine back with no explanation is not only lazy, but it ruins Anakin's arc in the original six films. Rey's character is all over the place in this movie and it ruins the amazing reveal in The Last Jedi where we found out that her parents were nothing but filthy junk traders, by saying that now she is actually somehow the granddaughter of Palpatine, and at the end she says she's a Skywalker. Kylo Ren is also given a lazy redemption arc that basically just copies Vader's and then he dies for no real reason. They bring back Star Wars icon, Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian just to give him nothing to do, and just like the Last Jedi Finn is pushed to the sidelines despite showing such promise in The Force Awakens. The final battle is just a checklist of things that should be in a finale. It copies the final battle of Avengers Endgame almost beat for beat, except it doesn't have the story line or character work that actually made that ending impactful. Rise of Skywalker solidified the sequel trilogy's legacy as a negative one, which is so unfortunate because of all the potential there was.
- CreatorJennifer CorbettDave FiloniStarsMing-Na WenDee Bradley BakerMichelle AngThe "Bad Batch" of elite and experimental clones make their way through an ever-changing galaxy.Like Rebels, The Bad Batch is very hit or miss. When the show focuses on the Empire and Crosshair it is very interesting and so well written, I love the politics of it. But the show always manages to lose it's momentum after an amazing episode by dropping a boring filler the week after. The show is at it's weakest when the actual Bad Batch are in the center of it, which is frustrating. Bad Batch is a decent show with some fantastic elements.
- CreatorJon FavreauStarsTemuera MorrisonMing-Na WenFrank TriggBounty hunter Boba Fett and mercenary Fennec Shand navigate the underworld when they return to Tatooine to claim Jabba the Hutt's old turf. The Book of Boba Fett is a mess. The actual Boba Fett storyline is boring and his arc isn't very interesting because we watch him turn into this wiser old man, but we've never really seen Boba as this ruthless bounty hunter that he's described as so the arc falls flat. The show is also very goofy and most of the action is laughably bad. The show is infamous for the middle episodes literally just being episodes of The Mandalorian and throwing Boba to the side. Now the sad thing is that while those two episodes are fantastic and easily the best part of the show, it completely ruins the flow of the show and the story is all over the place. They also killed off Cad Bane way to easily. Bringing in a beloved character just to kill him after one episode is such a waste. Those Mando episodes should've been saved for that show and Cad Bane and Boba's rivalry should've had more screen time to develop. Book of Boba is easily the weakest of the live action Star Wars shows in my opinion.
- StarsEwan McGregorMoses IngramVivien Lyra BlairJedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi must save young Leia after she is kidnapped, all the while being pursued by Imperial Inquisitors and his former Padawan now known as Darth Vader.I really like Obi-Wan Kenobi. I thought it served as a great character study of this beloved character who has lost everything. Ewan McGregor does a perfect job playing a broken Kenobi and I love how much more time we get to spend with Obi Wan in general. Having it be a young Princess Leia that helps restore Obi Wan's hope is so beautiful and that dynamic was portrayed excellently. Vivien Lyra Blair did a great job capturing the sass and heart that Carrie Fisher had in her iconic portrayal of Princess Leia. Darth Vader was also awesome in this show, I love how Hayden Christensen kind of got to redeem his performance in this show, as I loved the flashback scenes with him as Anakin and he gave it his all in the scene where Vader's mask gets cut in half. That entire final battle gives me chills and Obi Wan and Vader's final words to each other make me tear up. This show isn't perfect, the directing could've been better and the action could've been better choreographed. The Reva story line took up a bit to much screen time but it doesn't bother me as much as most people. It brought me so much joy seeing some of my favorite characters get so much time to shine in a project that has so much love and respect for what came before, while also expanding on their stories in ways that make them even better.
- CreatorTony GilroyStarsDiego LunaKyle SollerStellan SkarsgårdPrequel series to Star Wars' 'Rogue One'. In an era filled with danger, deception and intrigue, Cassian will embark on the path that is destined to turn him into a Rebel hero.Andor is excellent. Just like Rogue One this show feels so unique, as it really dives into the darker side of the Rebellion and we see the sacrifice that is made to fight the Empire. This show probably has the best acting in the franchise and Diego Luna does a great job really fleshing Cassian out throughout the show. The action is great and you feel invested in the story the entire time. I think a reason this show works so well is because it feels real. The story doesn't rely on Jedi or the force but focuses on human beings taking a stand against fascism. I also love the politics of Star Wars and seeing Genevieve O'Reilly finally getting to shine as Mon Mothma was awesome. I love getting the origin story of the rebellion and I love how it's handled with the seriousness and depth that it deserves.
- CreatorDave FiloniStarsCorey BurtonAshley EcksteinDee Bradley BakerAnimated shorts that feature Jedi from the prequel era.Tales of the Jedi is the first Star Wars animated show since Clone Wars to fully live up to it. I think it was interesting to split the story into Ahsoka and Count Dooku episodes to compare and contrast their journeys. Both were raised in the Jedi Order and grew to see the flaws within the system. Dooku let his anger overcome him while Ahsoka broke apart and became what a true Jedi should be. That type of stuff is so interesting and I love what this show adds to their character arcs. Finally seeing why Dooku fell to the dark side was awesome and I loved the scene where he pledged his allegiance to Palpatine. I really liked seeing Ahsoka's beginnings and I loved how we saw that Anakin's training is what helped her survive Order 66. We also see how incredible of a fighter Ahsoka is when she beats that inquisitor in like 5 seconds. I think this show does such a good job defining who these characters are and I hope we get a season 2 and get to see more stories of other Jedi.
- CreatorDave FiloniStarsRosario DawsonDavid TennantNatasha Liu BordizzoAfter the fall of the Galactic Empire, former Jedi Ahsoka Tano investigates an emerging threat to a vulnerable galaxy.Ahsoka was everything I wanted it to be. It was a great character study of Ahsoka as we get to explore her terror and guilt about what happened to Anakin. The way we get to see her come face to face with her past through the world between world flashbacks is so cool and unique. Bringing Hayden Christensen back to play both Anakin and Vader was awesome and he did a great job portraying both the people that he represents in Ahsoka’s mind. Ahsoka’s arc of overcoming her past and being confident enough to become a master herself was excellently done and Rosario Dawson finally got to make the role her own. The show’s villains are great. Shin and Baylan are both so interesting. The buildup to Thrawn’s return and the Republic’s lack of action is so well done and keeps you invested in the story. Overall I loved this me Ahsoka series.
