Anthony Bourdain was born in New York City, to Gladys (Sacksman), an NYT staff editor, and Pierre Bourdain, a Columbia Records executive. He attended The Englewood School for Boys in New Jersey and Vassar College (for two years), and was a graduate of The Culinary Institute of America. He began his career in the food industry as a dishwasher, gradually working his way up through preparation, to line cook, sous chef, and chef. He was executive chef of Manhattan's Brasserie Les Halles, which meant, in his words, that he got to "swan around the kitchen, taking credit for others' work." Educator - For 25 years, Josh was a wilderness guide with BOSS, the Boulder Outdoor Survival School, the oldest and largest survival school in the country. Josh first attended BOSS as a student in 1988 and rose through the ranks from apprentice to instructor to marketing director to president & CEO of the company. In December 2013, after 17 years at the helm, Josh sold BOSS to found Explorer At Large (XAL). Explorer At Large's mission is to create generations of curious and courageous explorers. XAL completed its second pilot implementation in Ohio school systems in 2019 and is now working with NASA and the Aldrin Family Foundation to bring STEM content to students around the world as the host and Content Team Leader for Project Ianos.

Originally from the small town of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts. Josh is graduate of Boston's Tufts University, from which he holds degrees in archaeology and drama. His work and travels have taken him to more than 50 countries around the world.
