After the Purple Wedding...Now What?9 of 10
Ride that evil reputation earned as a young actor into meaty, eccentric roles as an adult. Yes, we know James Spader was not a child when he made the movies that cemented him in the minds of filmgoers as an attractive jerk. For example, by the time Pretty in Pink was in theaters, he was 26. So not only did we get to know him as an incredibly elitist high school a-hole, he was also older than most college seniors.
But few actors provide a better roadmap for navigating the dread of being typecast while carving an interesting career out of memorable and very different roles.
From Pink and Less Than Zero to sex, lies and videotape, then Secretary, Spader is highly selective about his work. In recent years, he won a great deal of acclaim and several Emmys with his leading role in "Boston Legal". Now he's crushing it in every episode of "The Blacklist".
"I like playing character roles and I do not mind being a real son-of-a-bitch, or embarrassing myself," Spader is quoted as saying. "But as you go along you begin to realize that the work has a criterion and as your choices get broader you start cutting out the things that are not worth the time. On the whole I have been lucky; I do not look back with a huge amount of distaste for the work I have done."
