- DirectorChris ColumbusStarsMacaulay CulkinJoe PesciDaniel SternAn eight-year-old troublemaker, mistakenly left home alone, must defend his home against a pair of burglars on Christmas Eve.The best Christmas movie ever made is one of those films where there isn't a single wasted moment. Every scene in the movie has some emotion to it, and most of it is downright hilarious. Even the small details like the dialogue often overlooked is fantastic. It also gets you into the Christmas spirit by playing all the classic holiday songs and keeping the yuletide in every frame.
- DirectorHenry SelickStarsDanny ElfmanChris SarandonCatherine O'HaraJack Skellington, king of Halloween Town, discovers Christmas Town, but his attempts to bring Christmas to his home causes confusion.
- DirectorJoe DanteStarsZach GalliganPhoebe CatesHoyt AxtonA young man inadvertently breaks three important rules concerning his new pet and unleashes a horde of malevolently mischievous monsters on a small town. This is a really fun movie that scared me as a kid, but I love it even more for that reason. I love the characters and especially the action scenes like the mom vs. the gremlins in the kitchen.
- DirectorJohn PasquinStarsTim AllenJudge ReinholdWendy CrewsonWhen a man inadvertently makes Santa fall off his roof on Christmas Eve, he finds himself magically recruited to take his place.
- DirectorJeremiah S. ChechikStarsChevy ChaseBeverly D'AngeloJuliette LewisThe Griswold family's plans for a big family Christmas predictably turn into a big disaster.
- DirectorFrank CapraStarsJames StewartDonna ReedLionel BarrymoreAn angel is sent from Heaven to help a desperately frustrated businessman by showing him what life would have been like if he had never existed. This is such a touching and authentic movie all the way through, but, when Christmas arrives, it really escalates to a new level. Jimmy Stewart makes you root so hard for him throughout the movie to the point where you want to give up too as things keep going badly for him. It's a great message and should be an annual Christmas tradition in any household.
- DirectorLarry RoemerStarsBillie Mae RichardsBurl IvesLarry D. MannA young reindeer Rudolph lives at the North Pole. His father is one of Santa's reindeer and it is expected that Rudolph will eventually be one too. However, he has a feature which is a setback and causes him to be ostracized: his red nose. It's easily the most popular stop-motion Christmas classic ever made.
- DirectorChris ColumbusStarsMacaulay CulkinJoe PesciDaniel SternOne year after Kevin McCallister was left home alone and had to defeat a pair of bumbling burglars, he accidentally finds himself stranded in New York City - and the same criminals are not far behind. It's not as great as the first, but nothing ever could be. Still, this is plenty of fun, and I'm glad it exists.
- DirectorTerry ZwigoffStarsBilly Bob ThorntonBernie MacLauren GrahamA miserable conman and his partner pose as Santa and his Little Helper to rob department stores on Christmas Eve. But they run into problems when the conman befriends a troubled kid.
- DirectorLes MayfieldStarsRichard AttenboroughElizabeth PerkinsDylan McDermottA lawyer and a little girl must prove that a man claiming to be Santa Claus is the real thing. You better believe this is a touching movie. This is probably my favorite portrayal of Santa Claus of all time. And the good lawyer is just cool as a cucumber.
- DirectorRichard DonnerStarsBill MurrayKaren AllenJohn ForsytheA selfish, cynical television executive is haunted by three spirits bearing lessons on Christmas Eve.I have grown to like this more as time has passed, probably in part because I miss the charm of the 80s and 90s and hate so many movies today. It is pretty funny at times, but the dark atmosphere of it is what I like best.
- DirectorBurny MattinsonStarsAlan YoungWayne AllwineHal SmithThe classic Disney animated characters play the roles in this animated retelling of the Charles Dickens masterpiece. This, to me, is the best version of A Christmas Carol, probably because it's the one I grew up watching.
- DirectorRichard CurtisStarsHugh GrantMartine McCutcheonLiam NeesonFollows the lives of eight very different couples in dealing with their love lives in various loosely interrelated tales all set during a frantic month before Christmas in London, England. This is the one to blame for all the horrible connected romantic comedies that come out now. But the first was superior to all of them and actually made you happy watching it as opposed to annoyed.
- DirectorJules BassArthur Rankin Jr.StarsEarl HammondEarle HymanLarry KenneyAt a council convened by The Great Ak, the forest being tells the story of Santa Claus to explain why he deserves to be made immortal. What a fantastic interpretation of Santa's origin!
- DirectorGeorge SeatonStarsEdmund GwennMaureen O'HaraJohn PayneAfter a divorced New York mother hires a nice old man to play Santa Claus at Macy's, she is startled by his claim to be the genuine article. When his sanity is questioned, a lawyer defends him in court by arguing that he's not mistaken. The modern version is just a tad better than the original, and it might even just boil down to two or three scenes.
- DirectorTed DemmeStarsDenis LearyJudy DavisKevin SpaceyA cat burglar is forced to take a bickering, dysfunctional family hostage on Christmas Eve.This is probably the most bizarre Christmas movie there is, but it definitely falls under this heading. It's a comedy almost entirely, though there are some very dramatic moments involved. Dennis Leary really lets loose and steals the show as a thief who messed up and is desperate for a way out.
- DirectorJules BassArthur Rankin Jr.StarsShirley BoothMickey RooneyDick ShawnWhen a weary and discouraged Santa Claus considers skipping his Christmas Eve run one year, Mrs. Claus and his elves set out to change his mind. The plot to this one is pretty bizarre, even for a kids movie; however, the musical numbers hold up well, and Snow Meiser and Heat Meiser are two of the more interesting stop-motion characters ever thought up. It's just a shame they didn't get more screen time.
- DirectorBrian HensonStarsMichael CaineDave GoelzSteve WhitmireThe Muppets present their own touching rendition of Charles Dickens' classic tale.I don't really care for this one too much. It's not that funny, the ghost choices are missed opportunities, and it's not really touching.
- DirectorVincente MinnelliStarsJudy GarlandMargaret O'BrienMary AstorYoung love and childish fears highlight a year in the life of a turn-of-the-century family.I was surprised how many comedic elements in the writers slipped into this one, especially regarding the youngest girl's obsession with death. The songs are pretty solid compared as well, but the look of the film itself is the best part. It's grand without ever throwing it in your face.
- DirectorBob ClarkStarsPeter BillingsleyMelinda DillonDarren McGavinIn the 1940s, a young boy named Ralphie Parker attempts to convince his parents, teacher, and Santa Claus that a Red Ryder Range 200 Shot BB gun really is the perfect Christmas gift. Why this movie is considered such a classic I cannot understand. The only reason I could see anyone loving this movie is those that grew up in this era and can relate to it. But that doesn't explain why so many people under 30 seem to love it.
- DirectorBrian LevantStarsArnold SchwarzeneggerSinbadPhil HartmanA father vows to get his son a Turbo Man action figure for Christmas. However, every store is sold out, and he must travel all over town and compete with everybody else in order to find one.I love Arnold and I love superheroes, but the combining of the two for the finale was about the only part I really enjoyed in this movie. The rest just came off as awkward.
- DirectorJules BassArthur Rankin Jr.Takeo NakamuraStarsJosé FerrerPaul FreesJune ForayAn orphan drummer boy who hates humanity finds his life changed forever when he meets three wise men en route to Bethlehem.Very short but very sweet.
- DirectorJules BassArthur Rankin Jr.StarsFred AstaireMickey RooneyKeenan WynnA mailman reveals the origin of Santa Claus.Wedged between classics Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and The Year Without A Santa Claus, this one just doesn't meet the standards that we've come to expect from Rankin-Bass, in terms of both characters and songs.
- DirectorRobert ZemeckisStarsTom HanksChris CoppolaMichael JeterOn Christmas Eve, a young boy embarks on a magical adventure to the North Pole on the Polar Express, while learning about friendship, bravery, and the spirit of Christmas.I guess when you try to turn a 30-page kids book into a feature film, you have to add in a lot of garbage.
- DirectorRon HowardStarsJim CarreyTaylor MomsenKelleyOn the outskirts of Whoville lives a green, revenge-seeking Grinch who plans to ruin Christmas for all of the citizens of the town.I believe it was this movie that marked the turning point to where I hated about 90% of the films Hollywood produced. This one includes pretty much everything that is wrong with movies today: smart-alleck comments used in place of real comedy, ugly people meant to be portrayed as attractive, people who can't sing attempting to sing, and, last but not least, completely butchering something many people once found nostalgic. None of it is Jim Carrey's fault as he played the role he was asked.
