- DirectorQuentin TarantinoStarsLeonardo DiCaprioBrad PittMargot RobbieA faded television actor and his stunt double strive to achieve fame and success in the final years of Hollywood's Golden Age in 1969 Los Angeles.Such a weird and intriguing movie, even from Tarantino. Not much happens and the plot is essentially just following Rick and Cliff through their lives as each starts to realize their careers are at their end. Rick stars as baddies in one off episodes of shows, unable to get a leading role again due to his vices. Cliff's career as a stuntman relies on Rick, but with Rick not getting work and being the only person who vouches for Cliff, he is essentially just a best friend for hire (though they still seem like actual friends). Sharon Tate has a few scenes, but they really don't add much and she has little to no plot at all. It more just a brief portrait of an up and coming Hollywood star before a terrible incident ended her life. The thing that makes this movie so good is the dialogue, cool moments and characters. It's essentially a plotless movie where we view 60's Hollywood and LA at the start of the counterculture movement through the lives of two middle aged guys at the tail end of their careers in movies. Its just interesting to follow them as they're each interesting characters. Cliff has multiple run ins with the Manson gang who preyed upon the city during this time. The 2nd time is a pure Tarantino moment and he does some interesting alternate history stuff a la Inglorious Basterds. It's just a fun ride to sit through viewing Hollywood at the end of one of it's heyday. It's already almost 3 hours long, but I could have watched 3 more hours of these guys just wandering through their life in Hollywood.
- DirectorAnthony RussoJoe RussoStarsRobert Downey Jr.Chris EvansMark RuffaloAfter the devastating events of Avengers: Infinity War (2018), the universe is in ruins. With the help of remaining allies, the Avengers assemble once more in order to reverse Thanos' actions and restore balance to the universe.Wow...they did it! A fitting end to the first decade of the MCU. Has so many great moments that we've all been waiting for, and some we didn't know we wanted to see! I was a bit skeptical of the time travel premise, but since it was rather using time travel to collect the stones and not time travelling to effect stuff in the past, it works really well. It also goes against the usual tropes of seeing yourself in the past, killing your past self, and others that we are used to. It's a perfectly fitting finale to the first 10 years of Marvel. Here's hoping they can keep it good for another 10!
- DirectorRian JohnsonStarsDaniel CraigChris EvansAna de ArmasA detective investigates the death of the patriarch of an eccentric, combative family.Rian Johnson still rocks. A whodunit movie, that "reveals" the whodunit early on, but as the movie progresses you're unsure if that's actually what happened. A stellar cast of characters that reminded me of a darker Wes Anderson cast of characters. Ana de Armas is for sure the powerhouse in this movie. She's the central character and boy is she fantastic. Daniel Craig is also really fun in it. I wasn't 100% on board with his accent at first, but I warmed to it and really enjoyed him in this as it's a non-british version of him which we rarely see.
- DirectorJosh CooleyStarsTom HanksTim AllenAnnie PottsWhen a new toy called "Forky" joins Woody and the gang, a road trip alongside old and new friends reveals how big the world can be for a toy. They didn't need to make a sequel, but I'm glad they did as this turned out to be a fantastic adventure. Proof that sequels can be done right and keep a level of quality almost matching those before it!
- DirectorJon WattsStarsTom HollandSamuel L. JacksonJake GyllenhaalFollowing the events of Avengers: Endgame (2019), Spider-Man must step up to take on new threats in a world that has changed forever.A really fun and well done sequel. Improvement over the first with a really interesting twist on the antagonist. Not sure about some of the stuff that happens in the mid-credits scene, but part of it had me jumping out of my seat in joy! Balances the action and teen romance stuff well. Good change of scenery from NYC and big city stuff. Just overall a really fun adventure in the MCU. Spiderverse is still the best Spidey movie to date.
- DirectorTodd PhillipsStarsJoaquin PhoenixRobert De NiroZazie BeetzDuring the 1980s, a failed stand-up comedian is driven insane and turns to a life of crime and chaos in Gotham City while becoming an infamous psychopathic crime figure. If everyone thought Nolan's Batman series was dark & gritty, this one reduces those to rubble with how far they go. Yes, a majority of what makes this movie good is Joaquin Phoenix's performance, but there's still an extremely solid movie behind it. Yes, it does pay homage to early Scorsese movies quite a bit, but on it's own it's still a great movie. It has it's ups and downs for sure. The first 1/3 of the movie is slow to start, but it peppers in little bits to get the psychotic out of Arthur. It slowly picks up, and by the end it is full steam into greatness. This is just a normal movie about a guy going crazy and emerging as the Joker. There's little to no theatrics with most other comic movies. If Joker the character didn't exist, this movie would absolutely work as it's own original story. The creative forces behind it do keep saying it's a one of story, but the climax when he truly becomes Joker is too damn good to pass an opportunity to hopefully see Phoenix full on as the Joker. Hell, with this movie taking place in the late 70's, we could have another Batman set in the 90's! Here's hoping they do something again. It's great on it's own, but with that climax it'd be disappointing to not see Phoenix go full on Joker and witness one of this criminal schemes.
- DirectorMike MitchellStarsChris PrattElizabeth BanksWill ArnettIt's been five years since everything was awesome and the citizens are facing the huge new threat of Lego Duplo, invaders from outer space, wrecking everything faster than they can rebuild. Not as good as the first, but still a joyous and fun movie to watch. The real world stuff in this one tugged a bit more at my heart strings than the first with his father, but it's not as funny or original as the first was. Still a blast to watch if you're just looking for something fun and silly to watch.
- DirectorStephen MerchantStarsDwayne JohnsonLena HeadeyVince VaughnA former wrestler and his family make a living performing at small venues around the country while his kids dream of joining World Wrestling Entertainment. As a minor fan of WWE this movie was a great watch. Even if you're not a fan of wrestling it's a heartfelt story about a girl working hard to live out her dream and how it effected her family and especially her brother who had the same dream shot down. Just a really well crafted, paced, and written movie.
- DirectorSam MendesStarsDean-Charles ChapmanGeorge MacKayDaniel MaysApril 6th, 1917. As an infantry battalion assembles to wage war deep in enemy territory, two soldiers are assigned to race against time and deliver a message that will stop 1,600 men from walking straight into a deadly trap.Visually stunning and emotionally gripping. The "one shot" style really brings you to feel like you are in this war torn world. Stuff happens so fast and frantic just like it probably is to be in a warzone. Deakins as always is a master of his craft. Just an amazing feat of film making.
- DirectorAnna BodenRyan FleckStarsBrie LarsonSamuel L. JacksonBen MendelsohnCarol Danvers becomes one of the universe's most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races.A solid entry into the MCU. Has many downsides overall, but it's an entertaining starting point for the character. Nick Fury is the glue that holds this whole thing together. Without him it would have been much more dull.
- DirectorDavid F. SandbergStarsZachary LeviMark StrongAsher AngelA newly fostered young boy in search of his mother instead finds unexpected super powers and soon gains a powerful enemy.A really fun DC movie to watch! It's not perfect and the end battle goes on for way too long. But it's an entertaining movie to watch. It's good to see DC is improving, even though it took them like 4 years to finally make good movies!
- DirectorChad StahelskiStarsKeanu ReevesHalle BerryIan McShaneJohn Wick is on the run after killing a member of the international assassins' guild, and with a $14 million price tag on his head, he is the target of hit men and women everywhere.Better overall than the 2nd movie, but still doesn't hold a candle to the first. Great action, mediocre motivation. Some action scenes go on a bit too long and there is a middle stretch that adds nothing to the story.
- DirectorDavid LeitchStarsDwayne JohnsonJason StathamIdris ElbaLawman Luke Hobbs and outcast Deckard Shaw form an unlikely alliance when a cyber-genetically enhanced villain threatens the future of humanity. This is a big dumb action movie and it knows it. It doesn't pretend to be anything else. Just watch it and enjoy it's stupidity and impractical action scenes. It's borderline a cartoon with the unbelievable action it does as well as the mysterious evil organization with a secret boss only shown to us through a deep voiced audio effect. I am down for more of these if they keep making them entertaining dumb action movies. Totally a 80's vibe from this movie that I am down with. Just turn off your brain and have fun!
- DirectorJake KasdanStarsDwayne JohnsonJack BlackKevin HartIn Jumanji: The Next Level, the gang is back but the game has changed. As they return to rescue one of their own, the players will have to brave parts unknown from arid deserts to snowy mountains, to escape the world's most dangerous game.A somewhat entertaining movie to kill 2 hours. Don't go in expecting it to be as good as the original or the 2017 one. It's just dumb fun, though the 2017 did it much better. This is pretty much just a copy/paste of that but with a few minor tweaks.
- DirectorDean DeBloisStarsJay BaruchelAmerica FerreraF. Murray AbrahamWhen Hiccup discovers Toothless isn't the only Night Fury, he must seek the Hidden World, a secret Dragon Utopia before a hired tyrant named Grimmel finds it first.Love the first one, 2 was alright, this one was just disappointing. It has a good start, but then the WEAK villain and mediocre middle part really bring it down. The ending is strong and emotional, though felt kind of forced as it's the end of the trilogy. Superbly animated and a beautiful movie. I just wish the story was as strong as the first so the series could go out with a bang rather than just a meh.
- DirectorMichael DoughertyStarsKyle ChandlerVera FarmigaMillie Bobby BrownThe crypto-zoological agency Monarch faces off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah.A big monster, action packed sequel that majorly improves on the first. Still very lacking on the script/character front. Definitely some of the best visual effects ever in a movie.
- DirectorJames GrayStarsBrad PittTommy Lee JonesRuth NeggaAstronaut Roy McBride undertakes a mission across an unforgiving solar system to uncover the truth about his missing father and his doomed expedition that now, 30 years later, threatens the universe.Visually an extremely awe inspiring movie. The story beats it adds to a simple story weigh it down and add nothing to the story. Still worth seeing for Hoyte Van Hoytema's work, but the story left so much to be desired.
- DirectorRob LettermanStarsRyan ReynoldsJustice SmithKathryn NewtonIn a world where people collect Pokémon to do battle, a boy comes across an intelligent talking Pikachu who seeks to be a detective. The filmmakers made a fully realized Pokémon world and it looks great. It's just a shame that the plot/script is super generic and the characters are borderline annoying. Still worth it to see Pokémon on the big screen and in a real world, I just wish the story and characters were better.
- DirectorChris BuckJennifer LeeStarsKristen BellIdina MenzelJosh GadAnna, Elsa, Kristoff, Olaf and Sven leave Arendelle to travel to an ancient, autumn-bound forest of an enchanted land. They set out to find the origin of Elsa's powers in order to save their kingdom. For a sequel to the biggest animated movie ever 6 years later, boy did this not feel like a story deserving of that. This was never going to live up to the phenomena that the first did, but this doesn't feel like a story worth telling at all. The start isn't terrible, but once the plot gets going it's just dull and really anti-climatic. The 80's rock ballad from Hans is super stupid and not needed. Hell, his whole story arc is not needed and he could have been taken out of this movie completely and it would feel the same. The ending and finale just feels so flat and the problem that arises is solved so easily it barely feels like a climax. Though I'm not a crazed fan of the first, it at least had something interesting going on for it and mixed up the Disney formula. This is just dull and a mystery without a satisfying ending that was just created so Disney could produce another $500 million profit.
- DirectorTim MillerStarsLinda HamiltonArnold SchwarzeneggerMackenzie DavisAn augmented human and Sarah Connor must stop an advanced liquid Terminator from hunting down a young girl, whose fate is critical to the human race.Best post-T2 Terminator movie, but still just an average movie.
- DirectorJ.J. AbramsStarsDaisy RidleyJohn BoyegaOscar IsaacThe surviving Resistance faces the First Order once again in the conclusion of the Skywalker saga.Woof...what a terrible way to end the trilogy. JJ did a great job starting this new story, and he did the most abysmal job ending it. So many stupid story beats, but bringing back the Emperor is the worst. Just a lazy cop out to ending it all. Besides that it's still just a mess of a movie and plot. TFA felt like a Star Wars movie and return to form after the awful Prequels. TLJ was a great original take on SW and really changed up a lot of stuff we were used to in a good way. This just undoes all of Rians ideas so Disney can appease all of the backlash that movie got. It doesn't even feel like Star Wars. It almost feels like Star Wars funneled through the Marvel formula. Don't get me wrong, I love most Marvel movies, but this just doesn't feel like SW at all. This could just be swapped out with Guardians and still be the same plot. So disappointing.
