- DirectorFelix van GroeningenStarsVeerle BaetensJohan HeldenberghNell CattrysseElise and Didier fall in love at first sight, in spite of their differences. He talks, she listens. He's a romantic atheist, she's a religious realist. When their daughter becomes seriously ill, their love is put on trial. The only time I've ever found myself sobbing in a theater. Tragic and realistic. You see exactly how much loved ones can hurt each other when they're suffering the way these two are. But the music and story make you reconsider putting yourself through it all again. I haven't watched it again yet because it was such a perfect experience.
- DirectorKurt KuenneStarsKurt KuenneAndrew BagbyDavid BagbyA filmmaker decides to memorialize a murdered friend when his friend's ex-girlfriend announces she is expecting his son.Absolutely heartbreaking and unfortunately all true. Only other time I've fully sobbed during a film. Actually had to pause it because I was crying too much. But anyone who has seen it will tell you it was worth watching. The way it slowly unfolds, revealing truth upon truth is magnetic.
- DirectorDarren AronofskyStarsEllen BurstynJared LetoJennifer ConnellyThe drug-induced utopias of four Coney Island people are shattered when their addictions run deep..Required viewing for anyone in need of a lesson about why not to do drugs. You won't sleep for a week. But no one can doubt the incredible filmmaking that went into this masterpiece.
- DirectorMike FiggisStarsNicolas CageElisabeth ShueJulian SandsBen Sanderson, a Hollywood screenwriter who lost everything because of his alcoholism, arrives in Las Vegas to drink himself to death. There, he meets and forms an uneasy friendship and non-interference pact with prostitute Sera.Another addiction film. Nicholas Cage actually won an Oscar for his portrayal of a drunk who refuses help and his girlfriend who stays with him because she desperately needs to be loved. It depicts the harrowing downward spiral of an alcoholic in a way that is not often brought up in movies. Drunks are usually funny in Hollywood, but this shows a more tragic reality.
- DirectorKimberly PeirceStarsHilary SwankChloë SevignyPeter SarsgaardA young man named Brandon Teena navigates love, life, and being transgender in rural Nebraska.Based on a true story. Hilary Swank definitely earned this acting Oscar. Her performance is amazing, but this movie is not one you'd watch more than once. The experience is traumatizing.
- DirectorJuan José CampanellaStarsRicardo DarínSoledad VillamilPablo RagoA retired legal counselor writes a novel hoping to find closure for one of his past unresolved homicide cases and for his unreciprocated love with his superior - both of which still haunt him decades later.
- DirectorDavid FincherStarsDaniel CraigRooney MaraChristopher PlummerJournalist Mikael Blomkvist is aided in his search for a woman who has been missing for 40 years by young computer hacker Lisbeth Salander.Whether watching the Swedish version or the American one, if you've read the books you know what's coming. Both the books and the movies are captivating, but there are some moments of extreme and disturbing violence. They are necessary but do make the film hard to watch at times.
- DirectorDanny BoyleStarsJames FrancoAmber TamblynKate MaraA mountain climber becomes trapped under a boulder while canyoneering alone near Moab, Utah and resorts to desperate measures in order to survive.Everyone knows what happens in this movie and most of the film is interesting and funny and full of kinetic and original cinematography, but when it finally comes time to do the deed, you'll find yourself plugging your ears and watching through gripped fingers. Danny Boyle recognizes that your own imagination can be more damaging that anything he could show and he knows just how to play the hand he's chosen.
