In many ways John Cassavete's Faces dialogues with Antonioni's La Notte, both films seem more concerned with establishing a certain feeling throghout than showing any simple answers to their characters both existential and love related distress.
In Faces Cassavetes's way of filming and directing is so effective because it uncompromisingly focuses on the small things. It emphasizes the poetry in the gestures making every grim, stare or laugh seem meaningful.
What makes this film so good is not just that but also the reason why that filmmaking style was used in the first place and that is because he is dealing with such complex, volatile characters and themes that the more conventional methods just wouldn't be able to convey all the wide range of emotions the film needed. The scenes go from playful and funny husband and wife joking to passive agressive heated arguments in a matter of seconds.
Faces is a detailed study of heterosexual relationships as well as the female condition, male insecurity and sexism. It puts the two main characters in analogue situations with two completely distinct repercussions to demonstrate not just how differently man and woman see the world but also how different are their expectations towards each other.
It's a dense, touching, profound film that deserves at least two viewings.
