Historical Timeline

1996
  • The unendowed category 'Best Foreign Film' is introduced.

1999
  • The 1000th award is given this year.
  • Eberhard Diepgen, mayor of Berlin, presented the award for "Direction" to Tom Tykwer ("Lola rennt"). Some scenes were shown in which Diepgen ran with the award through Berlin, through the backstage area and finally on the stage. An inside joke, because in the past Tykwer took Diepgen to court. Diepgen used the movie title "Lola rennt" (Lola runs) for a PR campaign named "Diepgen rennt" (Diepgen runs).

2002
  • For the first time children's films get officially nominated.
