- The most intriguing enigma of modern India is the disappearance of her most dynamic and daring freedom fighter, 'Netaji' Subhash Chandra Bose, in the middle of August, 1945. Though the goal of a free India was achieved in 1947, there was no trace of the man who had wanted this most passionately through armed struggle; inspired millions to contribute to his war effort and enthused thousands to join his Indian National Army, to fight alongside the Japanese against the British-Indian Forces in South and South-East Asia. Even 77 years later, the mystery stands unresolved with important documents in Russia, France, the UK, and even in India, hidden in top-secret classified archives. The conflicting stories and accounts of this disappearance remain and so do the myriad theories that point to diverse directions. Was the Indian hero alive after 1945 and the plane-crash theory a concoction? Where and for how long did this dynamic leader live in the years following his disappearance and the birth of the sub-continental nation? What was he doing, or planning? Who helped him, and hid him? Most importantly, why are the files pertaining to Subhash Chandra Bose, after August 1945, still 'classified' in the archives of the UK, Japan, France, USA and Russia for "Security and Defence Reasons"? The documentary, 'Life After Death' explores all possibilities through extant archival material and recounts the varying stories through dramatic re-creations, and weaves them into an insightful discussion and debate between three distinguished 'Netaji' scholars - to find the answer to the Indian Republic's most clamorous question.
- "MASSOUD: DESTINY'S AFGHAN" The famous Afghan leader, Ahmed Shah Massoud was born in Jangalak in the Panjshir in 1953. He was assassinated by two Tunisian assassins on September 9th 2001, ostensibly as part of the 9/11 process to draw the US into the Afghan war. This film looks at Massoud's life through the eyes of his colleagues and friends and examines what made him the great leader that he was. Massoud's personal meditation on Islam, history, civilization, literature, politics and military science, enabled him to draw from the writings of the 12th century philosopher, Al-Ghazali. This taught him to wage war without hatred, bitterness or revenge. He truly regarded armed struggle as only an imposed and necessary evil in order to defend the freedom of Afghanistan; certainly not as an end in itself to be enjoyed as bloodlust or intoxication with power. Such moral integrity amidst warfare ranks Massoud as a true philosopher-king of the 20th century, to be remembered for his compassion and humanity. He was one of the few civilized and humane warriors. He was Destiny's gift to Afghanistan in its time of crisis. The film about the life and times of the late Commander Ahmed Shah Massoud is 52 minutes long and has been shot on location in Afghanistan.
- "Of all endangered species in the world the indigenous peoples are the most important ones-not because they are human, but because it is only them, who may show the "civilized" that there is no way of life, which may exclusively be called "right"...D. Quinn APATANIS OF ARUNACHAL PRADESH The mysterious and beautiful northeast hill region of India has been all but sealed off from the outside world. The state of Arunachal Pradesh, bordering Burma and China, is one of the few unspoilt wildernesses in India. The Apatanis of Arunachal Pradesh presents rare coverage of the Apatanis, the indigenous people of Arunachal Pradesh. The film is an experiential exploration of the Apatani people and their lifestyle by the Director/ Correspondent, Anu Malhotra. Through the film, the unique qualities of the Apatani culture and the intrinsic wisdom of their customary way of life are documented. The Apatani live in traditional villages and are famed for their "economic miracle" of terraced rice cultivation and the conservation of natural resources without the use of modern technology. The Apatani society exhibits an amazing level of solidarity due to their societal structure and belief in 'Donyi-Polo', the sun and the moon and the natural world. The Apatani shaman, the 'Nyibu', is the link to their Gods and spirits and conducts all rituals and sacrifices. The Director/ Correspondent spends time with an Apatani family and closely interacts with them. The film documents a ritualistic sacrifice, the time-honored Apatani legal institution of the Tribal Council, traditional Apatani wedding, funeral and burial ceremonies. The Beta SP film, with stunning visuals, is beautifully edited to an original musical score, interspersed with ambient Apatani songs and sound. The narrative is simple and emotive, bound to captivate the viewer.
