Even before Borchert can draw up the controversial contract, the Bildermanns have to stand together: Julian is kidnapped while jogging. In a very short time Antonius managed to get hold of the ransom, and Borchert returned with Julian after the dramatic handover. When the body of the alleged kidnapper is found and parts of the ransom later turn up at Julian's, Captain Marco Furrer suspects, however, that the hostage himself staged everything. Even Antonius and his second son Florian begin to doubt. Underworld boss Meier, the uncle of the dead man, also targets Julian. Borchert and his clerk Dominique still believe their client's assurances. During their research, they come under tremendous suspicion.

The supposedly simple court date ends in a fiasco, however, because Reto remembers on the witness stand that the young woman obviously knows the perpetrator and is probably involved in the robbery. But Borchert quickly realizes during his dangerous research that Sina should only serve as a scapegoat.

At the request of Lazzari's wife Cristina, Borchert and his boss Dominique take over the defense. However, his instinct tells the "lawyer without a license" that his client may not have fired the fatal shot, but that he was involved in the crime. Borchert also uses the observation skills of the experienced Corinna Riemer, to whom he feels attracted, and thus comes across an intimate secret and two other murder suspects: Altweger's younger wife and his nephew Stephan are a couple. But there are other hidden conflicts that Borchert must bring to light in order to solve the mysterious case.

While her younger half-sister Mavi sticks by Julia, her parents don't seem to be of any help. When Borchert felt the freezing cold of her ambitious mother and her career-focused husband, he felt reminded of his childhood - and felt a special obligation to his client. As soon as Julia was released on bail, she was seriously injured in a fire in her apartment. Another accident under the influence of alcohol? While Captain Furrer has no doubts, Borchert begins to turn every stone.

Borchert instinctively looks for the key to the mysterious case from the loose parts that seem to come from different jigsaw puzzles. In order to get confidential police information, the "lawyer without a license" persuades his partner Dominique to commit a serious breach of trust.
